Superman Creator’s Estate Reportedly Files New Lawsuit To Block James Gunn’s Movie From Releasing In Certain Countries
The upcoming “Superman” movie by James Gunn is once again embroiled in legal issues, as the estate of the Man of Steel’s co-creator has reportedly filed a new lawsuit that could potentially impact the release of the DC Universe film. After much anticipation to see Superman return to the big screen, the “Superman” movie is set for its summer premiere, with David Corenswet taking on the live-action role of the DC legend. Despite the previous lawsuit against the “Superman” movie being dismissed in April 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery now finds itself confronting another legal predicament.
According to a recent update by Matthew Belloni in his Puck Newsletter, Eriq Gardner reports that Marc Toberoff has re-submitted his copyright claim for the estate of Superman co-creator Joe Shuster in a New York court. Furthermore, Toberoff is aiming to obtain an order preventing Warner Bros. from using Superman in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, and Australia. This is due to a disagreement over copyright ownership in these countries, as Toberoff argues that the specific copyright laws in these regions support his claim.
As per Gardner’s report, Warner Bros. Discovery was instructed by the New York Supreme Court to submit their opposition documents by Friday. This was prior to their court appearance on June 4, where they would need to argue against being granted an injunction. However, at the time of this article’s publication, Warner Bros. Discovery has yet to issue a statement. Gardner suggests that the lawsuit could potentially hamper the worldwide release of Gunn’s Superman film.
