Shakira Concert Sparks Measles Panic: Fans Warned of Potential Deadly Outbreak

Shakira fans are flipping out over concerns from her concert held in New Jersey.

Health officials for the state are cautioning that the occurrence might be related to the outbreak of measles.

One enthusiast shared on Reddit: ‘Exciting news: I’m going to a concert, but now I might get ill,’ while another posted on Twitter: ‘I already have plenty on my plate, and now this happens.’

‘Thanks a lot peeps! Now we can’t even go to concerts, what’s next?’ added an angry fan. 

Based on a statement from the New Jersey Department of Health, an individual who attended the concert by the 48-year-old Colombian singer at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford on May 15 might have infected several staff members and attendees with the illness.

Measles, a highly transmissible airborne virus, can spread rapidly around the globe, but luckily, it’s vaccine-preventable.

Based on information from the health department, individuals who were present at the stadium between 7:30 p.m. on May 15 and 1 a.m. the next day may have come into contact with the virus.

In recent months, multiple states in the South and Southwest have been hit with measles outbreaks.

In communities where vaccination levels are relatively low across West Texas, a particularly harsh outbreak of the virus occurred, resulting in the tragic deaths of two children. Additionally, an unvaccinated individual in New Mexico was found to have contracted the virus before passing away.

I was absolutely gutted to learn that the health department hasn’t disclosed any information about the seating location or areas where the infected fan of Shakira’s May 15 concert gathered. As a die-hard fan, this leaves me in a state of uncertainty and worry for those who attended the event.

Even if someone wasn’t closely acquainted with those affected, they could still potentially catch measles because the disease is highly contagious.

So far, the state’s health department says that no cases of measles have been reported. 

People who may have been exposed to measles might not show any signs or symptoms until as late as June 6, since the disease has an incubation period that extends this far.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’d like to share an interesting fact about the iconic MetLife Stadium: it can accommodate approximately 50,000 concert-goers, but its capacity swells to a staggering 82,500 for both football and soccer matches.

One significant factor contributing to measles’ high contagiousness is that the virus can stay active in suspended respiratory droplets for up to two hours. These droplets, produced during activities like sneezing, coughing, or even casual speaking and breathing, have the potential to carry the virus and infect others.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that when there is just one infected individual, about 9 out of 10 unvaccinated people who come into close proximity with this person are likely to get infected too.

It was pointed out by the health department that the person diagnosed with an infection who went to the Shakira concert resided outside of town, yet they didn’t provide any information regarding whether this individual had been inoculated prior to the event.

Typically, the initial vaccination is provided to kids who are around 9 to 12 months old, and another dose is given when they’re between one and six years old.

Individuals who are concerned they might have caught measles are advised by the New Jersey Department of Health to contact their healthcare providers ahead of time, allowing them to prepare a separate treatment space to safeguard other patients from possible contagion.

This month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has verified that a total of 1,024 measles cases have occurred in 30 different states throughout 2025.

The agency pointed out that a vast majority (96%) of the documented cases occurred in people who had not been vaccinated, or in those whose vaccination status was uncertain.

Last week saw a second case of measles reported in New Jersey, and this was traced back to an infected person who attended Shakira’s concert. Meanwhile, health officials confirmed that a passenger at Newark Liberty International Airport had contracted the virus, having spent several hours in terminal B. This information was released by the health department.

3 instances, occurring earlier in the year, were documented within the state, and they all stemmed from a single household located in Bergen County.

128 people who tested positive for an infection have been admitted to hospitals this year, and out of that number, 69 are young children under the age of five.

Recently, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has faced criticism due to his statements that undervalued the significance of vaccinations in preventing measles during the recent outbreaks, while simultaneously advocating for questionable treatment methods without solid evidence.

Initially hesitant, he eventually agreed that the MMR vaccine is the most efficient method for curbing the transmission of the disease.

For quite some time, Kennedy has expressed doubts about vaccines, often making unfounded assertions that they might lead to autism, despite numerous studies finding no connection between the two.

As an overjoyed fan who somehow managed to secure tickets for Shakira’s concert on May 16, I feel incredibly fortunate! Not only did I get to witness the queen of Latin pop in all her glory, but I was also blessed with the surprise appearance of Pitbull! He kicked off the night with a captivating set filled with his own hit songs. What an unforgettable experience it was!
