Andy Serkis Wants This Extreme Twist for Alfred in The Batman 2
Andy Serkis, who played Alfred Pennyworth in “The Batman”, has a particular wish for the storyline of “The Batman 2”. In Matt Reeves’ series, Serkis introduced his portrayal of the well-known DC comics character, acting as guardian to the billionaire-turned-vigilante Bruce Wayne/Batman (portrayed by Robert Pattinson). Despite Alfred’s efforts to protect Bruce, he has consistently found himself in dangerous situations, a fact that Alfred must accept.
At a recent comic convention, movie critic here, and I had the chance to hear Andy Serkis talk about his character, Alfred, in “The Batman Part 2.” While we know Alfred has been a valuable ally for Bruce Wayne in his crime-fighting endeavors, he may not continue to play that role in the sequel as he confronts the heavy price of Bruce’s Batman lifestyle.
At Fan Expo Philadelphia 2025 (as reported by FandomWire), Serkis shared some insights about the upcoming movie in Reeves’ “The Batman” series. He expressed his hope that the sequel scheduled for 2027 would further explore and strengthen the relationship between Bruce Wayne (Batman) and Alfred, more so than previous installments.
As for Robert Pattinson’s character, Bruce Wayne (the Batman), he portrayed a guardian who appears to have no trace of paternal feelings within him. He strives to be a father figure, yet one he could never truly become. Interestingly, he expressed his eagerness to explore this dynamic further in the upcoming movie.
In the last film, I was captivated by Matt [Reeves]’s portrayal of a guardian who harbors no trace of parental instinct, struggling to fulfill a role he never could. This struggle was central to their relationship. He felt he had let down the one person he cherishes and aims to protect. He is skilled at teaching him various abilities, such as using tools and fighting, due to his military background. However, he knows more than just combat skills; he understands how to open coconuts, and that’s significant too.
In another interpretation: However, what he lacks is genuine, heartfelt fatherly affection. I’m eager to delve deeper into this aspect and uncover more about it. To be honest, I’m not familiar with the plot or where Matt is leading the story, but I hope to witness an intense examination of this theme, perhaps in a highly dramatic or challenging context.
Andy Serkis is slated to reprise his role as Alfred Pennyworth in the upcoming Batman sequel, making him one of the few cast members already confirmed for the new project. Since updates on the film’s script are still infrequent, it’s unclear at this point how Alfred will fit into the movie’s dark crime narrative, a mystery that may persist until a later date.
Titled “The Batman – Sequel,” Matt Reeves will continue to pen and direct the story, following the character of Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman, now fully embracing his role as the vigilante protector of Gotham City.
Originally scheduled for release in October 2025, the movie has now been delayed until October 1, 2027. After a long period of silence regarding the DC Elseworlds sequel, fans have just received some fresh news from DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran. He mentioned that it appears a script for the film is due to be submitted by the end of May.
How Could Andy Serkis Get His Batman 2 Dream?
Given that we know what Andy Serkis hopes for in The Batman 2, it’s quite possible that his visions for the sequel could become a reality.
It doesn’t mean that Matt Reeves will alter his plans for the upcoming Batman movie based on these new quotes; instead, it’s possible that he might have already had ideas similar to those pitched by Serkis in mind from the start.
Entering the narrative of “The Batman 2“, Robert Pattinson’s character, Bruce Wayne, has assumed the mantle of Gotham’s Protector. He has relinquished his pursuit of vengeance and fully embodied the role as a beacon of hope for the city.
Instead, an intriguing development in their relationship might occur if Alfred, at long last, decided to take on his responsibilities as guardian and protector, coinciding with Bruce’s shift in approach towards his vigilante activities as Batman.
In the initial Batman movie, Alfred chose to ignore Bruce’s habit of brutally fighting criminals at night. Contrarily, Andy Serkis’ DC character taking on a more paternal role in the subsequent film might create an intriguing conflict between Alfred and Bruce.
In the movie, it might delve into the strained relationships that arise when Bruce ultimately grasps the role model he must become for Gotham City, whereas Alfred ponders whether it’s wise for him to risk his life in the pursuit of being Batman.
