‘Blah Blah Blah’: Arcane’s Creators Explain Why They Ignored What Fans Wanted And Picked Different Characters
This article reveals plot details about the series Arcane, available on Netflix. If you haven’t watched it yet and wish to do so, remember that you need a Netflix subscription to stream both seasons.
By November 2024, when season 2 of “Arcane” was released, viewers were prepared to bid farewell to the beloved characters Vi and Powder (also known as Jinx). These sisters have become standouts in the expansive “League of Legends” universe. Despite their current popularity, series co-creator Christian Linke revealed that they weren’t initially chosen to be the main characters. In fact, during the show’s early stages of development, Jinx and Vi were not particularly favored by fans.
During an interview at the Arcane press event, which is currently promoting its award bid, I got to chat with Linke about something that had been puzzling me for some time – why Vi and Jinx were the main characters in this highly praised series. This decision raises questions about how other characters might be developed in the future. Linke admitted that he and co-creator Alex Yee could have opted for a more conventional approach. However, they decided to take a risk instead, as Linke shared: “We could’ve played it safe, but we chose to take a chance.
You’re able to analyze various types of data, such as identifying popular characters and more. Essentially, it comes down to discovering members of our in-house team who truly…embrace a deep affection or have a clear vision for a character. We’re seeking those specific areas. For instance, Piltover and Zaun were previously the least engaging regions within our IP before Arcane was created. They held little appeal for our audience…but for Alex [Yee] and myself, Vi and Jinx were simply fascinating. And we found ourselves asking, ‘What led to this? What sparked their relationship as sisters?’ We became curious, saying, ‘We want to uncover the story behind that.’
Reflecting on the show’s impressive success now, it’s astonishing to recall that Vi and Jinx might not have garnered the acclaim they did among viewers initially. As a movie critic, I can understand how tempting it could be for creatives to succumb to fan pressure or popular trends. Yet, it was Christian Linke and Alex Yee’s unwavering commitment to their vision that allowed the series to take shape as we now know and cherish it.
In the end, Arcane turned out to be a massive success on Netflix and ranks among the best shows for binge-watching. The creators decided to wrap up the series after two seasons because they believed that the storyline involving its main characters had reached its logical end. Although there are other similar shows available, nothing quite compares to Arcane. I’m still reeling from the emotional finale and left wondering about the fate of one specific character.
Absolutely, enthusiastic fans can continue to watch League of Legends characters progressing, as was mentioned earlier. Christian Linke has already begun brainstorming for the next series, whether it’s a continuation or not. At this moment, he and his creative team are doing exactly what they did with Vi and Jinx – exploring which stories they wish to narrate from various characters, regardless of their popularity.
It seems that much of our current focus involves questioning matters such as “What truly inspires you to create?”, “What essential elements do you require to flourish?”, and for us as creative individuals, “Which unique narrative might we bring to life?
I typically appreciate the world of Arcane without actually playing the games, but Christian Linke’s insights have sparked curiosity about characters and stories that I might be overlooking. It’s unlikely that a new League of Legends series will emerge anytime soon, or even make it to the 2025 TV schedule. However, Linke’s remarks ignite anticipation for the next tale he and his team will weave, and I can assure you I’ll be eagerly waiting on my couch to immerse myself once more in this captivating fantasy universe.
