Doctor Who Shocks Fans with Mrs Flood’s True Identity as the Rani!

Following two intriguing and enigmatic seasons, the long-awaited truth behind Anita Dobson’s Mrs. Flood on ‘Doctor Who’ has been unveiled. Initially presented as the neighbor of the Doctor’s companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), it soon became evident that Mrs. Flood was not as harmless as initially perceived. The episode “The Church on Ruby Road,” which introduced both characters, concluded with a shocking mid-credits scene where Flood breached the fourth wall to acknowledge her recognition of the TARDIS. This twist sparked numerous fan theories, which have continued to develop and transform alongside Mrs. Flood’s role within the series. However, “The Interstellar Song Contest” finally validated one of the earliest fan speculations, revealing that it was indeed accurate.

In the cosmic setting of the Interstellar Song Festival, Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor Fifteenth and Varada Sethu’s Belinda Chandra arrived at the Harmony Arena space station, a venue for a sci-fi adaptation of the Eurovision Song Contest. The throng of spectators included Mrs Flood, who was among those enjoying the competition. However, the event took an alarming turn when a devastating terrorist attack caused chaos, ejecting the crowd into the cold vacuum of space. Fortunately, the Doctor, with the aid of hologram specialist Gary and his medical spouse Mike, managed to rescue everyone. A post-credits scene disclosed that Mrs Flood was the last spectator Mike and Gary rescued, but her time in space inflicted a mortal wound upon her. This revelation unveiled that Mrs Flood was none other than the Rani.

Fans’ Biggest Mrs Flood Theory Became a Reality in “The Interstellar Song Contest”

In the Interstellar Song Competition, a Hellion named Kid, seeking vengeance for his destroyed home planet, hurled the spectators into space. However, it turned out they weren’t actually dead; instead, they were trapped within a mavity shell, causing them to enter a state of suspended animation. The Doctor, a Time Lord, stepped in to save the day. He collaborated with Gary Gabbastone, an expert on the arena’s hologram system, to convert those holograms into a “solid light” tractor beam, allowing them to reel people back onto the station. Afterward, The Doctor and Gary’s spouse, Mike, utilized a cryogenic chamber previously used by the event’s host, Rylan Clark, to revive the frozen audience members.

The episode appeared to finish following everyone’s revival, the Interstellar Song Contest wrapping up, and the Doctor and Belinda discovering something important. But as the Doctor Who theme song began playing and credits started rolling, a last-minute scene unfolded showing what happened to Mrs Flood. Mike and Gary extracted her from the cryogenic chamber, unveiling that she was the final audience member rescued. Flood then disclosed her unique double brainstem had frozen, which she said was fatal for a Time Lady. This unexpected revelation of her true species triggered Flood’s regeneration.

Instead of merely altering her appearance, Flood experienced a unique phenomenon called regeneration. This event is when a Time Lord splits into two – the old version remains, while a new one emerges. Mike wondered if Flood and her new self were actually the same person. The newly formed incarnation acknowledged they were both the Rani. She explained that the original Flood incarnation had become “a Rani,” whereas she was “THE Rani” – the definitive one, so to speak. Suspicions that Mrs Flood might be the Rani from Doctor Who’s classic era were validated by this thrilling scene, as it confirmed the iconic villain had indeed made a comeback.

Who is the Rani on Doctor Who?

The Renegade Time Lady has Done Battle With the Sixth and Seventh Doctors

Fans of “Doctor Who” have eagerly anticipated the return of the character, the Rani, to the sci-fi show for quite some time now, especially since her reintroduction to television in 2005. Despite being well-liked by both old and new fans, the Rani didn’t often make appearances as a villain in the original series. This rogue Time Lady was only featured in two stories during “Doctor Who’s” classic era, with her first appearance being in 1985’s “The Mark of the Rani,” opposite Colin Baker’s Sixth Doctor, and then again in 1987’s “Time and the Rani.” Actress Kate O’Mara portrayed the Rani in all her appearances before the show was revived.

The Mark of the Rani” Introduces the Maleficent Scientist, the Rani

In this tale, “Doctor Who” brought the character known as the Rani onto the scene, collaborating with another unnamed companion. This serial solidified the Rani’s reputation as a wicked scientist, performing macabre experiments on unwilling participants without any regard for their well-being. The storyline revealed that the Rani ruled over the planet Miasimia Goria, using its inhabitants as guinea pigs for her twisted research. Her experiments had caused the entire population to lose their ability to sleep. To address this issue, she was extracting chemicals responsible for inducing sleep in human brains from the residents of Killingworth, a 19th-century mining town.

The climax saw The Doctor capturing both the Rani and her accomplice, the Master, within the Rani’s TARDIS. Interestingly, one of the T-rex embryos that the Rani had stored in there began to hatch during their confinement.

In “Time and the Rani,” the Time Lady (Rani) nearly perished at the claws of her captive T-rex, but managed to survive and reunite with the Doctor. This tale began by causing the Sixth Doctor’s regeneration into the Seventh. As he dealt with his typical post-regeneration challenges in adjusting to his new form, the Rani seized this opportunity to masquerade as Mel, a companion of the Doctor, while secretly plotting to capture him. Her objective was to build a time manipulator that would grant her authority over time itself. However, when the Doctor thwarted her plans, she fled only to be betrayed by her Tetrap servants.

Prior to her reappearance in “Doctor Who” in 2005, the character known as The Rani made a single other screen appearance, which was the controversial special “Dimensions in Time” for Children in Need in 1993. In this storyline, The Rani captured different iterations of The Doctor in various time periods within the East End of London. This special was unusual because it combined elements from the soap opera “EastEnders,” and it did not receive favorable reviews from many “Doctor Who” fans. Kate O’Mara portrayed The Rani for the last time in this special, and the character did not reappear until 30 years later, in an episode titled “The Church on Ruby Road,” where she was disguised as Mrs Flood. Russell T Davies, the showrunner of “Doctor Who,” admitted during the making-of show “Doctor Who: Unleashed” that they often aim to meet audience expectations.

The Rani’s Return Brings Bi-Generation Back to Doctor Who

The Rani Returned in a Revival of a Recent Doctor Who Twist

Despite numerous “Doctor Who” fans speculating that Mrs. Flood was actually the Rani, it wasn’t until the grand and startling revelation that her true identity was confirmed. Having suffered a fatal injury due to exposure to the vacuum of space, Mrs. Flood underwent regeneration at the end of “The Interstellar Song Contest,” solidifying her status as a Time Lady. Rather than replacing Anita Dobson’s character with a new Rani, the writers opted for a unique twist: bi-generation. This means that both Dobson’s Mrs. Flood incarnation and Archie Panjabi’s new Rani character are now present in the “Doctor Who” Season 2 finale, giving the Doctor two versions of the Rani to contend with.

In “Doctor Who,” only one other case of bi-generational Time Lords has been portrayed, leading to the creation of Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor and the Fourteenth Doctor pairing up with Donna Noble’s family. The Rani’s bi-generation, however, unfolded quite differently. Dobson’s Rani became submissive to Panjabi’s version, reflecting her domineering and heartless character. Unlike the previous two Doctors who parted ways, Mrs. Flood will continue collaborating with the new Rani in their wicked schemes against the Doctor and Earth. This doubles the threat for the Doctor and Belinda as they approach the day when Earth met its demise.

Every Saturday, you can stream new episodes of Doctor Who on BBC iPlayer in the United Kingdom, and on Disney+ if it’s accessible.
