Robert Eggers’ gothic horror film titled “Nosferatu” reimagines the story originally told by F. W. Murnau with creative modifications. For instance, a character called Van Helsing features in the narrative, but he is not named as such in this movie. The straightforwardness of “Nosferatu” and Eggers’ admiration for the 1922 silent film led him to opt for a remake rather than an adaptation of “Dracula“. This choice enabled Eggers to blend elements from various interpretations, incorporating characters like Van Helsing from “Dracula” and strengthening the female lead’s role, who ultimately becomes the heroine in Eggers’ version of “Nosferatu“.
In contrast to the romanticized depictions that have been popular for years, Eggers’ reinterpretation takes a radically different tack. The film Nosferatu adheres to the classic horror motif of vampire folklore, compelling viewers to grapple with the intricate aspects of desire and its shadowy aspects. Boasting an exceptional cast, the movie seeks to rejuvenate the genre and has since been recognized as one of the most impactful films of 2024. Yet, it offers much more than just the dynamic between Count Orlock (Bill Skarsgård) and Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp). The standout aspect is Willem Dafoe’s striking portrayal of Van Helsing, which emerges as a key element in Nosferatu.
Willem Dafoe’s Albin Eberhart Von Franz Is An Adaptation Of Van Helsing
Dafoe Has A Long History With Nosferatu’s Source Material
In his adaptation, Eggers infuses characteristics from Murnau’s original character, portrayed by Willem Dafoe, who is Albin Eberhart Von Franz – a figure with occult skills used for benevolent purposes. Notably, this character’s name is derived from Albin Grau, a producer and set designer of the 1922 silent film adaptation of Dracula, as well as Marie-Louise von Franz, a renowned Jungian psychologist.
In essence, the character in Von Franz shares similarities with Abraham Van Helsing from Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel, as the 1922 film Nosferatu is a loose adaptation of Dracula. Many of the main characters in this adaptation mirror those from the original novel. Notably, Murnau’s Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror includes a character resembling Van Helsing, named Bulwer and portrayed by John Gottowt. However, De Niro has a particular affinity for the storyline of Nosferatu.
Previously, the actor had played the vampire in E. Elias Merhige’s film “Shadow of the Vampire,” providing him with a unique understanding of the source material before his upcoming role in Eggers’ modern interpretation of the classic German Expressionist movie. Interestingly, Eggers acknowledges that “Shadow of the Vampire” was a particularly influential film for him, and therefore, Dafoe was thrilled to embody this version of Van Helsing (as reported by Den of Geek).
How This Version Of Van Helsing Is Unique
Dafoe’s Von Franz Is Far More Practical In 2024’s Nosferatu
In contrast to other adaptations, Willem Dafoe’s portrayal of Albin Eberhart Von Franz in “Nosferatu” deviates from the traditional Van Helsing by employing less conventional methods to combat Nosferatu. Similar to how occult lore shaped Grau’s work, it also formed the basis for the characterization of Dafoe’s Von Franz, giving him a rich understanding of occult knowledge from the early to mid-19th century, as reported by “Den of Geek.

In the 2024 adaptation of Nosferatu, the portrayal of Van Helsing delves deeper into the folkloric shadows, contrasting sharply with the character’s traditional depiction. This darker interpretation is heavily influenced by Jungian concepts, as seen in Eggers’ reimagining. This allows for a more practical and grounded approach from Von Franz, which Dafoe’s scenes often emphasize. For example, Von Franz admits: “We may think ourselves enlightened, but we are merely blinded by the fog of science. I have grappled with the devil as Jacob wrestled the angel in Penuel, and I tell you that if we are to master the dark, we must first acknowledge its existence!
