Home and Away Star Refuses Genetic Testing for Dementia: ‘There is No Cure’

Jessica Redmayne prefers not to learn about the possibility of developing dementia, similar to her mother’s condition.

The actress from Home and Away, aged 32, witnessed her mother’s prolonged struggle with the disease, choosing instead to avoid knowing if she might face a similar destiny, despite testing options being accessible.

‘It is a scary thing to think about,’ she told the Daily Telegraph on Tuesday.

The former Hi-5 singer explained that since there’s no available treatment, it seems unnecessary for him to learn about it.

It would be disheartening to learn that you’d become ill in a decade, knowing that this was the end of your health journey.

I prefer to keep going with my life, unaware if possible, as the unknown can be quite frightening.

In 2023, when my dear mother, Tina, departed from this world, I found myself struggling to recognize her amidst my personal fight.

Back in 2014, when my world-cherished actress disclosed her truth, it sent a chill down my spine. Since then, her family’s life has taken an unexpected turn as her dear mother was diagnosed with early onset dementia. I can only imagine the challenges they’ve faced and continue to face daily. It’s heartbreaking, yet their resilience continues to inspire me.

She shared with The Daily Telegraph that her father had expressed to her, “Everyone carries their burdens, and this is ours.” This statement significantly shifted her viewpoint on life.

It’s quite difficult to accept that they will eventually forget I exist, and won’t recognize our relationship because I am their granddaughter.

Later, she explained the sorrow she experienced when her mother failed to recognize her as her own child anymore.

At some stage, she recognized my name, but failed to comprehend that I was her offspring. Instead, she perceived me as her best friend, and it seemed difficult for her to accept the fact that she had children.

Dementia refers to a progressive brain disorder that gradually impairs an individual’s memory, reasoning, and ability to perform daily activities. This can result in confusion and difficulties in recognizing familiar faces, including those of loved ones.

In 2016, Jessica gained popularity as a part of the well-known kids’ band Hi-5, however, she departed from the group the year after.

She’s made guest appearances on various well-known Australian television programs, such as Wentworth, Fisk, and Neighbors.

The Melbourne native was also as Harper Matheson on Home and Away.

Jessica is participating in the Memory Walk & Jog, an initiative aimed at increasing understanding and collecting donations for individuals battling dementia.

Previously Dementia Australia appointed Redmayne their ambassador.

She hoped by sharing her story she will help others who are experiencing a similar situation.
