Buffy’s 10 Scariest Monsters Ranked: You Won’t Believe #1’s Terrifying Power!
Among the numerous terrifying and unforgettable creatures that appeared in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, these are the ones that gave viewers the most chills. Buffy Summers (played by Sarah Michelle Gellar) encountered a wide variety of monsters, beasts, vampires, and villains during the seven seasons of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. Some of these encounters were weekly monster-themed episodes, while others involved season-long or multi-season story arcs for a main antagonist. Despite being a network series, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” was not shy about incorporating some truly frightening creatures into its narrative.
Regardless of her nickname, Buffy is inclusive and ready to fight, strike, and eliminate any terror that jeopardizes her, her companions, or anyone else residing in Sunnydale. The creators behind Buffy, led by Joss Whedon, drew inspiration from folklore, myths, and contemporary culture to construct their array of monsters, incorporating both traditional tales and original creations for the series. This show is not intended for young audiences, as some of the more terrifying creatures it portrays are so chilling that even mature viewers may find themselves staring cautiously into the darkest recesses of their rooms as night falls.
10. Inca Princess
Season 2, Episode 4, “Inca Mummy Girl”
In the 15th century, eastern Peru birthed a chilling figure known as The Inca Maiden. Sacrificed by her own people at sixteen to safeguard her kingdom, she was later displayed in a traveling museum exhibit, eventually arriving in Sunnydale. Tragically, a student’s clumsy mishap shattered her protective curse, bringing the desiccated remains back to life. Her appearance is quite terrifying, with her empty orbs and sunken visage giving her a gaunt, unnerving look. She regains her strength by draining it from her victims.
In a chilling metamorphosis, her terrified foe crumples inwardly, similar to the way mummies from the Mummy movies take lives. While she predominantly appears human throughout the episode, the initial scenes leave an eerie imprint and you’re constantly on edge, anticipating that she might revert to her other form.
9. She-Mantis
Season 1, Episode 4, “Teacher’s Pet”
In the first season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it isn’t until late in an episode that we learn the creature is actually a She-Mantis. For much of the episode, she appears as Natalie French (played by Musetta Vander), a stunning woman who charms virgin males at Sunnydale High School. Luring them to her office, she would spend intimate moments with them, only for her to later transform into a giant insect and consume her lover’s head in the manner of a mantis.
I find myself in awe, yet unsettled by the metamorphosis I’ve witnessed, for the She-Mantis appears as if a mindless arachnid, enticing humans into her sinister web. There’s no malice guiding her actions; she merely acts on instincts that are inherently cruel and predatory. Truly terrifying is the fact that even a vampire recoils at her presence. Yet, despite her fearsome nature, she can be easily subdued with insecticide, relegating her to the lower tiers of this list.
8. Wig Lady
Season 6, Episode 12, “Doublemeat Palace”
In Sunnydale’s Doublemeat Palace fast food joint, an older worker known as The Wig Lady frequently visits. It turns out that this seemingly harmless woman is actually a disguise for a demon. Despite her claims of loving the cherry pies, she has a hidden taste – not for desserts, but for the restaurant’s employees. When Willow (played by Alyson Hannigan) confronts this menace, she discovers that beneath her wig lies a gaping hole in the woman’s head, from which emerges a massive worm-like demon.
The demon has the ability to squirt a type of corrosive substance that immobilizes its victims, and it’s a truly appalling spectacle, made all the more distressing by the hollow expression of the elderly woman who is struggling nearby. It’s The Thing, transported to Sunnydale. If it had fully exited its human-like shell, maybe the Lady in Wig would rank a bit higher on this list.
7. Bezoar
Season 2, Episode 12, “Bad Eggs”
Aficionados of “Harry Potter” may recall a bezoar as the stone object that Harry forcefully inserted down Ron’s throat in “Half-Blood Prince”, serving as an antidote against poison. However, the bezoar from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” deviates significantly. In this series, the Bezoar is a fleshy, living entity residing beneath the very foundations of Sunnydale High School. At its core lies a watery, reptilian eye, making it a truly terrifying sight. What makes matters worse, it spawns scorpion-like offspring known as baby Bezoars, which can latch onto humans and exert control over them.
The Bezoar, surprisingly, has the ability to consume humans as well, posing a threat even to a vampire like itself, coming dangerously close to overpowering Buffy. In a desperate move, she manages to escape by hacking her way out with an axe. Although it remains stationary, the very thought that such a mind-controlling, fleshy creature resides beneath everyone’s feet is downright terrifying. This fear intensifies before its eye even opens.
6. Zachary Kralik
Season 3, Episode 12, “Helpless”
In the world of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, most vampires are quite terrifying. However, Zachary Kralik takes this fear factor up a notch. Prior to his transformation into a vampire, Kralik was a serial killer, indicating that he was already a menacing monster long before he was granted eternal life. This particular vampire is introduced in a straightjacket, serving as a challenge for Buffy. Despite being contained, he manages to break free and kidnaps Joyce, with the intention of using her as bait to draw Buffy out, hoping to turn her into a vampire and then have her kill her own mother.
This plan is incredibly wicked and intricate, a concept only birthed by an exceptionally malicious undead entity. Kralik is so troubled that he resorts to medication to ease the torment of his madness. He torments his prey psychologically before taking their lives, finding pleasure in the agony. He also takes delight in the sensation of a cross searing his chest. While there are many perilous vampires in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, none compare to this terrifying creature.
5. Ted
Season 2, Episode 11, “Ted”
One formidable monster from the popular series “Buffy” differs in its terrifying nature compared to typical adversaries. In a season 2 episode titled after his character, John Ritter plays Ted, a man who was once a human inventor. He created a robotic replica of himself, intending it to be the ultimate human version. However, this robot took control, leading Ted’s life and eventually abducted older women even after Ted’s demise. As Ted starts courting Buffy’s mother, Buffy becomes suspicious when she notices his behavior growing increasingly controlling and aggressive.
Ted embodies the epitome of an abusive partner, a chilling truth for many individuals. His terrifying nature stems from the fact that many have encountered similar behaviors such as emotional and physical abuse, controlling tactics, and efforts to isolate in their real-life relationships. The metal exoskeleton visible on his cheek after Ted is hurt only adds to the fearsome image.
4. Queller Demon
Season 5, Episode 9, “Listening To Fear”
The Queller Demon, originating from beyond our planet, remains largely enigmatic, with only its chilling reputation known. This ominous creature is rooted in medieval Europe, where it was said to be conjured for the purpose of silencing (or quelling) individuals believed to be mad. In season 5, character Ben Wilkinson, portrayed by Charlie Weber, invoked the demon to tackle an escalating issue: the increasing number of mentally ill individuals in Sunnydale. This situation was a consequence of the trapped demon-goddess Glory, who inhabited his body.
The Queller is a substantial slug, featuring a human-like visage and a mouth resembling a lamprey eel: circular and equipped with teeth reminiscent of saws. It’s a chilling spectacle as it creeps across the ceiling while pursuing Buffy’s mother, Joyce (Kristine Sutherland). The terror escalates when it swiftly dashes to attack. This eerie creature is one that could easily give you the shivers, moving slowly towards you from an obscure corner of your vision.
3. Gnarl
Season 7, Episode 4, “Same Time, Same Place”
In the seventh season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, there’s a demon named Gnarl. He’s a skinny, goblin-esque figure with a visible rib cage beneath his tight green skin, and a large nose that hangs over an enormous mouth full of too many shark-like teeth. The scariest aspect about him is undeniably his eyes – sunken and yellow, with tiny black pupils that seem ravenous. Gnarl dwells in a cave in Wilken’s Grove, where he immobilizes anyone who gets close using a venomous secretion.
Subsequently, he meticulously peels the skin from his gruesome victims while they are still alive, devouring their flesh afterwards. Gnarl’s voice is eerie and reminiscent of nursery rhymes, yet far more terrifying than any childhood tale. He exudes a sense of danger, intimidation, and an overwhelming feeling of discomfort whenever he is seen.
2. Gentlemen
Season 4, Episode 10, “Hush”
As a devoted fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I’d have to say that The Gentlemen are undeniably among the most chilling creatures to grace the show. The episode “Hush” alone is an absolute masterpiece of creativity and suspense. What makes these four demons truly petrifying isn’t just their eerie appearance – pale, bald, wrinkled faces with unwavering grins, dressed in black suits that they don’t walk in but hover silently instead. It’s the unsettling eeriness of it all that lingers long after the episode ends, making “The Gentlemen” one of the most haunting memories from the series.
In a chilling twist of manners and mayhem, the way these entities, known as The Gentlemen, operate is by visiting towns, stealing everyone’s voices, rendering them unable to be harmed, and extracting their hearts. Despite their refined demeanor, they are impeccably polite, bowing and clapping, all while performing this grisly task. The eerie quietness they create is stifling, and their inhuman responses to violence and fear make them some of the most terrifying monsters ever portrayed in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
1. Der Kindestod
Season 2, Episode 18, “Killed By Death”
If you happened to catch a glimpse of Der Kindestod, one of the unfortunate children’s experiences could fall into two categories: either you found yourself disenchanted with Buffy and horror as a whole, opting instead to explore other captivating genres in television and cinema, or, like myself, you developed an intriguing fascination with terror and fear. Der Kindestod is the stuff that haunts dreams. This creature bears some resemblance to Freddy Krueger, sporting a fedora and burned, scarred visage; however, it manages to be even more chilling.
I am not a creature of kindness or mercy; I am known as Der Kindestod, the Reaper of Children. Unlike other terrifying beings, I don’t rely on fearsome teeth to claim my victims. Instead, I hold them down, making myself invisible to others, and fixate on them with my piercing white eyes. Then, in a chilling display, my eyes detach from their sockets and grow into grotesque stalks that attach to my prey, draining them of their very life force. A heart-stopping terror, when my eyes unfurl in the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, they lock onto the viewer with a bone-chilling stare.
