Blue Bloods Ended Too Soon: The Better Spin-Off CBS Ignored
14 years after its debut in 2010, the beloved series, known as “The Reagan Family”, concluded with season 14’s episode 18 titled “End of Tour”. The storyline saw the Reagan family joining forces to restore New York City, culminating in a heartfelt reunion dinner. This gathering was particularly poignant due to a pregnancy announcement and served as an uplifting finale. However, the knowledge that this was the last episode was deeply saddening for devoted viewers who had been faithfully following the show since its beginning. Despite being an unexpected hit, it resonated with audiences thanks to the genuine family bonds portrayed by all the Reagans.
With “Blue Bloods” concluded, CBS finds itself without a cornerstone program and yearns for an apt successor. The network anticipates that “Danny Reagan’s Boston Blue” might fit the bill, but it remains uncertain if it will thrive without the presence of the Reagan family. Introducing any show after such a cherished series is bound to be risky, and “Boston Blue” may not meet CBS’s high expectations. It seems that the ideal spin-off series was actually lurking in plain sight all along.
Blue Bloods Ended Too Soon
The Cancellation Devastated the Cast and Crew
It wasn’t unexpected when Blue Bloods eventually got canceled, given its escalating production costs and decreasing viewership in recent seasons. In essence, CBS was experiencing dwindling profits with each new episode. The situation became so dire that the cast and crew allegedly consented to substantial wage reductions merely to maintain the series’ production. Regrettably, even these cuts didn’t prevent it, as season 14 marked the conclusion of the Reagan family storyline and ultimately the end of the show after a decade on television.
Regrettably, the series finale came sooner than expected for a show that had the potential to run indefinitely. Given the commitment of the main characters and actors, the program could have continued to captivate its loyal audience for years. The decrease in profits from traditional television is not unique to CBS; it’s an industry-wide trend as network TV has seen a significant decline in recent times. With viewers increasingly opting for streaming platforms, shows that rely on traditional viewership have been finding it challenging. CBS had the opportunity to adapt to the evolving distribution landscape by prioritizing streaming for Blue Bloods, but instead, it was canceled to make room for a new, less expensive series.
Boston Blue Is Set To Take Blue Blood’s Place
Danny Will Lead His Own Show
In a surprising twist for the “Blue Bloods” universe, it seems that “Boston Blue” won’t adhere strictly to the traditional TV model, but it does represent a significant departure from what was previously expected. The most notable change is that Danny Reagan, portrayed by Donnie Wahlberg, will be relocating from New York City to Boston. Here, he will forge connections with an entirely fresh family, immerse himself in a new police force, and engage with a city that has been largely unfamiliar to him until now. Interestingly, he will be the only major cast member transitioning to this new series.
Danny will team up with Detective Lena Peters (Sonequa Martin-Green) as he adjusts to a new setting. The show aims to appeal to dedicated fans by focusing on familial relationships, despite parting ways with the Reagans. Initially, the program was intended as an independent procedural, but the cancellation of “Blue Bloods” provided an ideal chance to intertwine the idea into an established universe. CBS anticipates attracting both new and existing audiences with this move. Regrettably, opting for Danny as the main character meant missing out on a more thrilling spin-off opportunity.
Jamie and Joe Deserved a Spin-Off Instead
More Reagan Family Members Could Have Cameos
It’s not surprising that Danny was selected to headline his own show, given his popularity. However, he wasn’t the character with the most potential in the original series. Characters like Jamie Reagan (Will Estes) and Joe Hill (Will Hochman), on the other hand, had untapped potential that never fully materialized. Joe, who is the son of Joe Reagan, joined the show late, debuting only in season 10. Throughout most of his life, he was unaware of his ties to the Reagans, which led to very difficult familial relationships. This strained relationship with Jamie was so volatile that Frank (Tom Selleck) ultimately compelled them to work together.
In the end, Jamie and Joe managed to mend their strained relationship. This was achieved when Joe came to appreciate the importance of the Reagan family, while Jamie learned to accept Joe for who he is. At first, Joe distanced himself from his family, but as the series concluded, it became clear that family ties held immense worth for him. For now, we can expect only brief appearances from these characters in future episodes.
Instead of just a Jamie and Joe spin-off, it could have expanded the Reagan family saga, providing opportunities for more frequent appearances by all family members. This setup would have allowed for a buddy-cop show that centered around their bond, with elements of action, humor, and the series’ characteristic drama. With Jamie and Eddie expecting a baby, the addition of a new character could have generated fresh storylines and increased tension.
Why Jamie and Joe Did Not Receive a Spin-Off
It Would Defeat the Purpose of the Cancellation
Sadly, the spin-off featuring Jamie and Joe never came to fruition, as it would’ve contradicted the initial decision to cancel the show. The primary reason for the series’ termination was its high costs, and a Jamie and Joe narrative would only perpetuate those issues. Both characters are regular attendees at family gatherings, so the main cast would still be heavily involved in the production. Moreover, they are likely to remain in New York City, which necessitates maintaining an expensive production setting.
The fact that the Boston Blue series could exist is due to Danny choosing to depart from the Reagan family. Considering that Jamie is pregnant and Joe has recently come to appreciate the importance of family, there seems to be no logical reason for either character to abandon New York City. Although rumors suggest new developments, none of them clarify why Jamie and Joe would leave the Reagans. A potential spin-off featuring Jamie and Joe could continue the Blue Bloods storyline, making it an intriguing concept. Regrettably, CBS appears uninterested in pursuing a continuation, as it might only strengthen the reasons for the show’s initial termination.
