The Good Place: Shocking Soulmate We Missed

In The Good Place, Michael, played by Ted Danson, had to restart his simulated Good Place neighborhood close to a thousand times due to Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) and her friends consistently uncovering they were actually in the Bad Place. Each reboot saw subtle variations in the neighborhood, but the main characters also experienced numerous unique scenarios within this setting. Moreover, one of these iterations hinted at a surprising romantic pairing that aimed to deceive the show’s primary human characters.

In the series “The Good Place,” William Jackson Harper’s character, Chidi Anagonye, and Eleanor form a significant romantic duo that is subtly one of the best will-they/won’t-they love stories in sitcom history. Despite not officially ending up together due to the show’s unique storyline, they essentially do so, given the limitations of their world’s narrative. Initially, Chidi and Eleanor are presented as each other’s soulmates by Michael, but this notion is later exposed as another of Michael’s manipulations to further torment his subjects psychologically. Throughout most reboots of “The Good Place,” Chidi continues to be Eleanor’s primary romantic interest, although there are exceptions.

I Really Wish The Good Place Would Have Shown More Of Eleanor & Tahini’s Soul Mate Pairing

Eleanor was assigned as Tahani’s soul mate in Reboot 218

In “The Good Place,” it’s revealed that most of Michael’s deceitful Good Place neighborhood is inhabited by demons disguised as humans, all working together to uphold the charade that Eleanor and her friends are in a genuine afterlife paradise. When Michael attempts to improve his novel torture technique by rebooting the neighborhood, he tests various combinations of soul mates, including some demons. The series only briefly shows a few of these alternative soul mates for Eleanor, but it’s been confirmed that Tahani Al-Jamil (portrayed by Jameela Jamil) is one of them.

As a die-hard fan of ‘The Good Place’, I can’t help but ponder over the intriguing dynamic between Eleanor and Tahani. While there are instances where Eleano playfully hints at harboring feelings for Tahani, their relationship never develops into a romantic one. It’s plausible that they might have explored this in Reboot 218, when they were supposedly soulmates; however, the show only gives us a glimpse of this version of the neighborhood, limited to Tahani knocking on Eleanor’s door on the first day and being introduced by Michael. It’s a humorous scene, but I can’t help but feel that exploring more of this reboot could have added depth to the storyline.

By the finale of The Good Place, Eleanor and Tahani form a strong bond, yet they are quite distinct individuals at the series’ outset. Initially paired together in Reboot 218, their differences might have led to humorous squabbles over trivial matters. Moreover, without Chidi’s guidance, Eleanor would likely struggle with learning goodness, potentially causing chaos within Michael’s experiment in a hilariously catastrophic manner.

Eleanor’s Real Soul Mate Was Also A Bad Match At First

Michael was sure Chidi would be bad for Eleanor

Although soulmates may not exist as portrayed in The Good Place, Michael’s continual pairing of Eleanor and Chidi proved to be an unforeseen compatible match for both. However, their initial compatibility is similar to how mismatched Eleanor and Tahini would have been. Eleanor initially displays impulsive and sometimes abrasive behavior upon her arrival in the afterlife. Conversely, Chidi is indecisive to a fault, which often disturbs those around him, and strives to keep everyone content despite his unyielding moral compass.

As a devoted fan of “The Good Place”, I can tell you that certain reboots created tension between Eleanor and Chidi, while others completely severed their connection. Fortunately, the majority of these reboots provided them with chances to either reunite or strengthen their bond as seemingly destined soulmates. Despite the fact that they eventually became exactly what each other needed, it took extraordinary circumstances for them to cross paths and develop feelings for one another. They constantly tested and motivated each other to become better individuals, mirroring how Eleanor and Tahini ultimately transformed their relationship by the series finale.
