How James Gunn Fixes Man of Steel’s Biggest Superman Mistake in 1 Line

James Gunn’s fresh take on the Superman movie trailer presents an essential scene that requires just a single line of dialogue to demonstrate how the DC Cinematic Universe film is rectifying a significant error from Man of Steel. The DC Cinematic Universe (DCU) is tasked with distinguishing itself from its predecessor. Regrettably, the final installments of the old DCEU generally received negative criticisms and struggled at the box office. Consequently, DC Studios must emphasize that the DCU is embarking on a new direction.

In my opinion, launching the franchise’s films with James Gunn’s Superman movie seems like the right approach. It shifts away from the grim tone of the previous Superman films featuring Henry Cavill, instead offering a truer-to-comics, colorful interpretation of Superman. David Corenswet takes on the role in this new version, and based on the latest trailer, it’s clear that Gunn’s Superman will chart a significantly different course compared to Zack Snyder’s DCEU movies, which were often met with controversy, starting from Man of Steel.

I Think Man Of Steel Did Not Understand Jonathan Kent

Kevin Costner’s Version Of The Iconic Character Was Far From Ideal

My preferred choice among Zack Snyder’s DCEU films is “Man of Steel,” but it’s not without its share of debate. There are two instances in the movie that caused me to ponder about Snyder’s grasp of Superman and his entourage. The decision to have Cavill’s Superman take a life in his inaugural movie within the franchise is frequently discussed as the film’s most contentious aspect. Yet, I believe the portrayal of Jonathan Kent in “Man of Steel” merits equal scrutiny.

In simpler terms, you grasp that Snyder’s portrayal of Jonathan was similar to how other iterations of the character urged Clark to hide his powers for safety, as seen in Smallville. However, it’s inconceivable that Jonathan would ask his son to stand by when a bus full of children were in danger. Later, Jonathan chooses to perish in a tornado instead of letting Clark rescue him, which contradicts the character of Superman who is always there to save people, especially his father. It’s questionable why Jonathan even doubted Clark’s decision to save the busload of kids initially.

James Gunn’s Superman Movie Trailer Shows How Pa Kent Should Be With Just One Line

The DCU Has A Better Understanding Of The Character

Following several tantalizing glimpses, backstage peeks, and secret glances, we’ve finally unveiled the initial full-length trailer for the DCU Superman film. The footage shed light on the movie’s narrative, showcasing David Corenswet’s Superman grappling with the repercussions of his actions. As public sentiment and the military turn against him due to his involvement in a foreign conflict and being perceived as an American agent during this time, Superman explains that he had to act because people were dying and he needed to save everyone he could.

In the brief conversation within the trailer between Corenswet’s Clark Kent and Pruitt Taylor Vince’s Jonathan Kent in Gunn’s Superman film, we see a clear illustration of how the creators have grasped the essence of Superman’s father figure. Jonathan tells Clark, “It’s your choices and actions that define you.” This is a pivotal, comforting moment for Clark as his father emphasizes that he was born to help people, a role he can’t escape. In stark contrast to Man of Steel, this portrayal of Jonathan Kent rectifies the character’s treatment in that movie.

Superman Needs To Be All About Saving People

The DCU Is Going For A Comics-Accurate Approach With Superman And His Supporting Cast

I wholeheartedly support James Gunn’s perspective regarding Jonathan Kent. Although it’s crucial to maintain Clark Kent’s secret identity, especially during his upbringing when he could slip up and accidentally expose himself, Jonathan should not have acted as Kevin Costner did in Man of Steel. His portrayal of the iconic DC character was far from ideal, and his handling of the bus situation made him appear less than admirable.

In a different rendition:

Jonathan Kent, as portrayed in Smallville, more accurately captured the tone that Snyder desired for the character, without delving too deeply into darker territories. John Schneider’s Pa Kent was stern, always working to protect Clark’s identity, but never belittling him harshly for helping others. The reason Superman is the world’s greatest hero isn’t solely because of his powers, but rather due to the positive influences in his upbringing. From the latest trailer of Superman, I am optimistic that Corenswet’s portrayal will honor the hero’s legacy, learning from the mistakes made in Man of Steel.
