Gary Lineker confirms BBC exit in video message – watch his full statement here

Gary Lineker has confirmed that he is leaving the BBC in a new video message.

For several decades, the ex-soccer forward who transitioned into sports broadcasting has been the face of football programming for this network, appearing in shows like “Match of the Day,” and has consistently ranked among the BBC’s top-earning on-screen personalities.

Over the past week, Lineker found himself in a heated discussion, stemming from his post that included a video shared from an account known as Palestine Lobby. The video, titled “A Two-Minute Explanation of Zionism,” incorporated a small cartoon rat symbol.

Throughout history, Jews have often been portrayed as vermin or rodents, such as rats, in hateful and discriminatory propaganda, most notably during the Nazi era in Germany.

Lineker, having previously announced his exit from Match of the Day, has now accelerated his departure from the BBC ahead of schedule, and he once again expressed regret for a controversial post he had shared.

In his latest video, he expressed: “A week ago, I unknowingly posted something on Instagram with an emoji that carries negative implications. Had I noticed it, I wouldn’t have shared it at all.

As soon as I found out about it, I promptly removed the post and offered an apology. Let me repeat, I sincerely apologize for any pain or distress I may have caused. It was indeed a mistake and oversight on my part, and I should have been more careful. I am fully aware of that.

Throughout my entire life, I have consistently advocated for the rights of minorities and humanitarian causes, unwaveringly opposing any form of racism, such as antisemitism, which I deeply detest. It has no place in our society, and should never exist.

It seems most appropriate for me to relinquish my presenting roles at the BBC entirely, which includes declining the opportunity to present the upcoming FA Cup and World Cup. This coming Sunday marks my final appearance as a host.

Working with the BBC for the past 30 years has been an honor and immense joy for me. Among many things, presenting Match of the Day stands out, as it’s deeply meaningful and plays a significant role in my personal life.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to each of the incredibly skilled and delightful individuals – whether in front or behind the camera – whom I’ve collaborated with for thirty years. You are simply outstanding.

After a lengthy and delightful partnership with the BBC, we find ourselves at a point where it’s best for both the organization and myself to move forward independently. I can’t thank you enough for your extraordinary support and affection throughout the years – it truly means the world to me. I look forward to seeing you all on Sunday.

As reported, Tim Davie, the head of the BBC, stated that Gary has admitted his error. Consequently, they’ve decided he won’t host any more shows beyond this current season.

For more than twenty years, Gary’s distinctive commentary has been a cornerstone of football broadcasting for the BBC. His unwavering enthusiasm and deep understanding have significantly influenced our sports reporting, gaining him admiration from sports enthusiasts not just in the UK, but worldwide. We are grateful for his valuable contributions.

In a recent message to the BBC Sports team, Alex Kay-Jelski, our newly appointed head of sports, admitted that the past week has been challenging and filled with strong emotions. He encouraged everyone to wrap up the season powerfully as it is Gary’s last broadcast.

Match of the Day airs on BBC One and streams on iPlayer.
