Chunnel

Occasionally, a film’s working title can provide valuable insights. On other occasions, like with the movie known as “The Cosmic Circus,” the title leaves people scratching their heads and asking, “What on earth does that mean?” This was the reaction of many when it was announced that Marvel Studios’ upcoming film, which has been referred to as ““, is also known as “Chunnel.” So, for those wondering, “Chunnel” refers to… (the rest of the sentence would continue with the relevant information).

The Channel Tunnel is what typically comes to mind for most Europeans when they hear about it; it’s the train link between the U.K. and France that was established over 30 years ago. It appears improbable that this situation has any connection to a movie, unless the X-Men are secretly trying to enter as undocumented immigrants clinging to a vehicle.

As the report progressed, it’s worth noting that the Chunnel has made appearances in Marvel Comics prior to this point, and interestingly enough, it has been connected to X-Men storylines on two occasions. This occurred in issues #129-130 of New X-Men, a period when the character Fantomex was first introduced into the Marvel Universe. This connection could potentially suggest that “The New X-Men” might be the team’s official name. The article then delves deeper, providing an overview of the storyline, which may now find its way to the MCU.

In this narrative, Fantomex finds refuge at the Paris branch of X-Corp after obtaining data on the Weapons X program during his time in the Chunnel. He appeals to the X-Men for assistance in dismantling Weapon XII, which is concealed within the tunnel. However, it’s later revealed that Weapon XII is actually Weapon XIII, who managed an escape much like Wolverine did.

What if “Chunnel” Means Something Else for the MCU’s X-Men?

Introducing The New Avengers paves the way for the introduction of a new X-Men team, which seems like the logical next step for the franchise. As we know, the “old” X-Men will appear in “Avengers: Doomsday”, and there are still characters from the franchise’s past lurking in The Void who may make an appearance as well. Moving forward, a new X-Men team is set to emerge in the MCU, and they will be instrumental in shaping the next decade of Marvel Cinematic Universe storylines. This upcoming phase could very well be referred to as the Mutant Saga, given its clear implications.

Instead of “Chunnel” being the direct connection in one X-Men storyline, it might have alternative explanations. Given that mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) have just emerged within the last few years, there’s a need to clarify where an entire group of X-Men unexpectedly originated. Conceivably, “Secret Wars” could offer some insights, similar to how “Loki” unveiled the origins of the Multiverse Saga.

A possible alternative might be that the X-Men have been secretly residing on an isolated sanctuary known as Krakoa, a place designed to shield them from public view yet allow for discreet movement through teleportation networks. In simpler terms, they could be utilizing something like the Chunnel, but in their case, it’s more of a ‘Mutant Tunnel’. However, only Kevin Feige can confirm this, and he will share his insights when he feels the time is right.

Until then, with ample opportunity to ponder, it’s likely that the next X-Men film won’t hit screens until 2028, after the culmination of the Multiverse Saga in 2027. Feel free to brainstorm your theories!
