The Real Reason Behind Ellie’s “You Swore” Line in The Last of Us Will Shock You!

Supporters of “The Last of Us” are still recovering from the startling event in Season 2, Episode 2. Even gamers who anticipated it found the scene more intense with live actors rather than computer-generated characters. Now, as attention turns towards Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and her quest for revenge, we follow her and Dina (Isabela Merced) as they journey treacherous landscapes in pursuit of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), aiming to avenge Joel’s (Pedro Pascal) demise.

Lucky for us, Joel didn’t vanish completely. He made a comeback in Season 2, specifically in Episode 6 – though it was actually the tail-end of Episode 5 where he reappeared. This return offered deeper insights into one of the recurring mysteries that had been building throughout the season.

Ellie Saying “You Swore” Wasn’t What You Thought

Multiple times in the show’s promotional material, a scene is shown where Ellie angrily confronts Joel by exclaiming, “You swore!” This seems to reference events from the Season 1 finale. In this episode, Ellie falls into Firefly captivity and is brought into a room where doctors intend to experiment on her in search of a cure. However, at this critical moment, Joel understands that the procedure would ultimately prove fatal for Ellie.

As Marlene (Merle Dandridge) whisks him away to keep him from disrupting their potential cure, Joel manages to break free. Now relentless and determined, he slaughters multiple soldiers, even those who try to surrender. He also ends the life of Ellie’s surgeon, who turns out to be Abby’s (Kaitlyn Dever) father. With Ellie still unconscious, Joel carries her and exits the building. When confronted by Marlene, he doesn’t hesitate and takes down his longtime friend as well.

After Ellie regains consciousness and they’ve successfully escaped from the Fireflies, Joel fabricates a tale to her. He claims that the Fireflies had failed to develop a cure using immune individuals they encountered. Ellie wasn’t unique in this regard. He explains that raiders appeared, necessitating their hasty departure. He does so because he understands that Ellie would have been willing to sacrifice herself for the sake of the cure, even if it meant her own demise. He also wished to shield her from the burden of knowing she was the only hope for halting the outbreak and didn’t act on it. Ellie pleads with Joel to vow that his story is genuine, and he does so hesitantly.

In Season 2, it’s clear that when Ellie says “you swore” in the trailer, she’s referring to a deception that becomes evident later on. Although Ellie uncovers the truth before Joel passes away, her response is distinct. This specific statement, though, pertains to an entirely different lie, one that had kept Joel and Ellie apart for such a long time.

It’s All About Gail’s Husband

The true adventure unfolds as Joel accompanies Ellie on her initial run, following her training under Jesse (Young Mazino). He intends to teach her the basics. During their journey, they encounter Eugene, who is married to Gail (Catherine O’Hara). Eugene has been bitten and is near death. Desperate for a final farewell, he pleads to be transported back to the community so he can meet his wife one last time and converse with her. Joel initially objects, but Ellie insists it’s not a major issue; it’s simply the compassionate thing to do.

After some negotiations, Joel eventually consents, yet sends Ellie off to prepare while he prepares Eugene instead. She asks him to assure her that he will return with Eugene, and he gives his word. However, in reality, Joel ends his life. Ellie witnesses the aftermath, and she’s enraged. They wrap up Eugene’s body and bring it back to their community.

When Joel gave Gail Eugene’s body, he deceitfully claimed that Eugene was in a poor state. Joel didn’t want her to see him in that condition, and he staged the situation himself. Upon seeing her husband returned, Gail embraced Joel, expressing gratitude. However, Ellie couldn’t stomach the falsehood. “He’s lying,” she declared, causing Joel to look surprised. Ellie revealed the truth to Gail, alleviating her own guilt and demonstrating that she wouldn’t let Joel compromise his human values. From then on, their relationship became tense.

What Does Ellie Actually Say About the Fireflies?

Instead of the dramatic unveiling one might anticipate, Ellie discloses to Joel that she uncovered the truth about the Fireflies when he deceived her regarding Eugene. At this moment, Joel gives her a look reminiscent of their past encounter. It was then that realization struck her, although she confesses that she suspected it all along, yet chose not to acknowledge it to herself.

With moist eyes, she shares with Joel the truth he’s aware of – that if she possesses the cure, it’s her destiny, and she should have perished. She accuses him of being selfish, yet he emotionally counters by saying it’s because he loves her in a manner beyond her comprehension. Ellie replies, “I don’t believe I can ever forgive you for this, but I wish to give it a chance.

In this instant, Ellie understands beyond doubt that Joel cares for her deeply, akin to how a father cherishes his daughter, following his actions towards her at the party. Regrettably, with Joel no longer around, she can neither forgive him nor express her gratitude. Yet, she finds solace in the fact that she’ll be able to retaliate against those whom Joel shielded her from, honoring his memory in some way.
