Ellie Kemper Reveals Why Erin and Andy Shouldn’t End Up Together
2025 promises a joyful year for fans of the popular series The Office, as Greg Daniels’ upcoming spinoff, set in a newspaper office, will debut on TV screens in September. This development is significant enough to bring back the Scranton branch of Chili’s restaurant. Although the new setting may mean fewer updates about familiar characters, actress Ellie Kemper recently shared her thoughts on the fluctuating relationship between Erin and Andy at Dunder-Mifflin, a stance I find myself agreeing with strongly.
Previously, Kemper expressed some reservations about Erin and Andy as a couple. In a recent interview with People, when asked to speculate about their current relationship status, the actress initially offered a friendly gesture towards Ed Helms’ quirky character but later mainly emphasized Erin’s well-being instead. Here’s how she explained it:
“Initially, I showed some goodwill towards the eccentric character played by Ed Helms, but ultimately focused on ensuring Erin’s happiness.
Although they might not be the ideal match, they could manage to make things work. To put it simply, my tone suggests doubt in their success as a couple, so I have my reservations. To clarify, Erin seems to be moving towards something greater and more promising, not that Andy was a poor choice.
momentarily, fans rooting for Erin and Andy as a couple came close to triumph – a win that remained just out of reach as The Office concluded its ninth season. So, it’s plausible that someone who stopped reading there might assume Kemper believes Erin and Andy would eventually reconcile permanently.
However, contrary to popular belief, I didn’t particularly enjoy their romantic storylines. While Erin and Andy are both beloved characters from The Office, individually they appeal to me more than their relationship does. Frankly, I found Andy’s romantic behavior to be over-the-top, even compared to Jim’s and Dwight’s combined antics. Yes, he did care for others, but his attempts to demonstrate this often fell flat.
In my thoughts, Erin usually embodied a charming innocence associated with youth. I can’t help but picture her finding her perfect partner post-show, maybe someone captivated by her after watching the in-story documentary, completely smitten.
Regarding Erin’s present location, Ellie Kemper speculates that Erin likely bid farewell to Dunder-Mifflin, and is now perhaps savoring life as a promoted employee. In her words:
It appears to me that she is diligent and dedicated, and I believe she places great importance on maintaining balance – be it in her work or personal life. Given her values and achievements, I suspect she may have advanced to a higher position, though it could be within a paper company or another field. Regardless, I hope she continues to manage her career, family, and friendships effectively, as that is my hope for her.
It’d be fantastic, wouldn’t it, if the upcoming spinoff of Office, titled The Paper, manages to include a few appearances from characters hailing from the U.S. original? (I must admit, the prospect of Ricky Gervais’ character David Brent or any other character from the original UK comedy making an appearance wouldn’t disappoint me either.) It’s not clear if keeping fans informed about Erin and Andy’s current situation would be the primary focus, but it certainly would be if Ed Helms is the one making a cameo.
