Doctor Who Shocker: Mrs. Flood Revealed as Classic Villain The Rani!
This material reveals plot twists from the sixth episode of Doctor Who‘s second season, titled “The Interstellar Song Contest.” It is currently available for streaming on both BBC iPlayer and Disney+.
In a recent development, showrunner Russell T Davies has spoken up regarding the appearance of the classic antagonist The Rani in the most recent episode. Archie Panjabi marked her entrance as the rogue Time Lady The Rani in “The Interstellar Song Competition.
In the middle of the episode on Saturday, May 17th, it became clear that the character Mrs. Flood (played by Anita Dobson) was actually The Rani in disguise. This revelation came as a shock, especially since it was discovered that she had been hiding from her long-time adversary, The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa). Both The Doctor and Mrs. Flood were then catapulted into the vastness of space during a terrorist attack at the Song Contest by two individuals named Kid (Freddie Fox) and Wynn Aura-Kin (Iona Anderson). Although Mrs. Flood was later revived, she expressed sadness because the harm done to her “twin brain system” necessitated regeneration.
Initially, Mrs. Flood was taken aback when she found herself having been divided, separating from Panjabi’s group. Panjabi’s manifestation then declared: “We are known as The Rani. Although you have now assumed the title of a Rani, I am The One True Rani.
Doctor Who Classic Series Villain The Rani Has Returned
In the most recent installment of the captivating behind-the-scenes web series, I found myself pleasantly surprised when Davies confessed that many insightful fans had accurately predicted that Mrs. Flood was none other than a reincarnation of the enigmatic character, The Rani.
It turns out that Mrs. Flood is indeed the character we’ve all been referring to as the Rani. You know how when someone new shows up, people start saying they’re the Rani? Well, it seems I’m giving them what they want, in a sense. Yes, she is a Time Lady, yes, she is the Rani, and yes, she’s bi-generated. Now, she goes by Mrs. Flood, but let me tell you, having Archie Panjabi play the Rani is just thrilling!
I’ve been part of the team working diligently to uncover Mrs. Flood’s real identity for quite some time now. The revelation wasn’t spurred by fan speculation alone; we had our own investigations underway beforehand.

The producer affirmed that the character was essentially intended for this role from the outset. They had long suspected her to be “The Rani”. As it turns out, “The Rani” is an iconic villain from the long-running series “Doctor Who”, who hasn’t been revived since the show resumed in 2005. She’s been biding her time, and now it seems that the moment has finally arrived.
“Sometimes you just want to deliver what people expect.”
Towards the end of the show, Anita Dobson shared her feelings of liberation following the end of the two-year-long mystery surrounding Mrs. Flood’s true identity, which had been a subject of fan conjecture.
She’s been here for some time as Mrs. Flood, but she’s definitely active now, she asserted. In fact, not many people can claim to divide themselves and produce The Rani, so it’s understandable that she’s emotional about the situation!
She added: “My whole journey’s been unusual and really exciting!”
Initially, the character known as the Rani made her debut on “Doctor Who” during the 1985 episode titled “The Mark of the Rani.” It was Kate O’Mara who brought this character to life. In this serial, we find the Rani having reservations about allying with The Master (portrayed by Anthony Ainley), as she did so because the Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker) was attempting to thwart her attempts at manipulating historical events in 19th century England.
In two additional TV appearances as The Rani, O’Mara starred in “Time and the Rani” (1987) which led to the Sixth Doctor transforming into the Seventh Incarnation, played by Sylvester McCoy. A special mini-episode titled “Dimensions in Time,” produced for Doctor Who’s 20th anniversary in 1993, saw The Rani ensnare different versions of The Doctor and his companions within a time loop lasting twenty years, set in London’s East End.
The Rani Made Her First Doctor Who Appearance in 1985
- Kate O’Mara portrayed The Rani in all of her previous TV appearances and also voiced the character in Big Finish audio dramas.
- In the audio realm, Siobhan Redmond, of the Royal Shakespeare Company, took over the role in Big Finish audio following O’Mara’s death in 2014.
- Doctor Who classic series writing duo Pip and Jane Baker co-created The Rani for her 1985 TV debut.
Unlike The Master, The Rani isn’t inherently malicious. While she may resort to violence when necessary, her primary drive is to conduct scientific research rather than seeking power or conquest across the cosmos. In the world of Doctor Who, The Rani and The Doctor were once comrades who studied together on Gallifrey until The Rani was expelled for unethical experimentation.
The much-anticipated next episode of “Doctor Who,” titled “Wish World,” will air this coming Saturday, May 24th, exclusively on BBC iPlayer within the United Kingdom, and globally on Disney+.
