Colin Jost Made Michael Che Apologize To Scarlett Johansson During SNL Joke Swap, But He Didn’t Get In The Last Word

Last night on SNL, viewers were treated to another exchange of jokes, which was somewhat predictable given the circumstances. Avid fans had been anticipating another installment of the much-loved “Weekend Update” segment, where hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost write jokes for each other to read live on the spot due to the ideal conditions. The episode in question was the season finale, which has previously included joke swaps, and also featured Scarlett Johansson as host – Jost’s real-life wife. Moreover, Johansson had mentioned “retaliation” a few days prior, making this an opportunity that was hard to resist, particularly since it might have been the last Weekend Update for Che and Jost.

It’s great that the joke exchange lived up to expectations! As anticipated, it was filled with racial humor and jokes about the infamous Minecraft chicken jockey scene, but what stood out most was when Jost made Che persuade Johansson to appear and personally apologize to her.

From my perspective, in this comedy skit, it’s me who finds myself compelled to recite remarks about my supposed ambition to control the reigns of the show. There have been whispers suggesting me as a potential heir to creator Lorne Michaels, but he hasn’t shown any signs of hanging up his director’s hat yet.

Actually, his biographer has suggested that it’s more probable he’ll scale down his commitments rather than leave, given his age of 80 and the fact that he can’t continue running things indefinitely. As a previous headwriter and long-term “Weekend Update” host, Jost appears to be a strong candidate for taking over, although it remains uncertain if he’ll stay long enough for this to happen.

I’ve noticed quite a buzz lately, not just about him potentially taking over the show, but also about him possibly leaving it. He’s been involved in numerous ventures outside of SNL, beyond the ferry boat, and some fans speculate that his wife hosting the season finale might signal his departure. Although Che and he were committed to staying until the 2024 Presidential Election, with that now behind us, they find themselves at a crossroads, needing to decide if they want to continue given their record-breaking Weekend Update tenures.

For the time being, our only course of action is to savor the remarkable legacies they’ve created. They are undeniably one of the finest Weekend Update hosting duos ever, thanks to their sharp wit, exceptional chemistry, and unyielding readiness to push boundaries for a laugh. The pinnacle of their audacity has always been evident in their joke swaps, a recurring segment that many consider their best work. If this was their final performance, we’ve been incredibly fortunate to have enjoyed as many as we did.

There’s been no word yet on which cast members will return or depart for the upcoming season of SNL. The show faces many uncertainties as it approaches its off-season, but given the impressive pool of talented actors SNL has assembled, the program should continue to thrive regardless of any changes that may occur.
