Raygun The Musical Sells Out After Legal Battle and Name Change

comedian Stephanie Bridgess openly discussed minimal alterations made to her Raygun-inspired musical following a court dispute with the Olympic breakdancer.

Raygun: The Musical, penned by Broadbride and featuring her performance, has successfully premiered and is now selling out shows in various theaters across Australia.

The Olympic breakdancer’s legal team temporarily halted operations due to a disagreement over intellectual property rights involving Rachel ‘Raygun’ Gunn, whose humiliating performance at the Paris Olympics earned her international ridicule.

Broadbride shared with The Sunday Project that only a minimal amount of adjustments were needed for the show to pass through lawyers.

I made an adjustment since a fresh element has been introduced – the whole legal situation underwent a transformation, and we brought in a character who represents a lawyer.

The comedian says she renamed the character ‘Spraygun’ and said it gets an extra laugh.

‘It’s completely fictional’ she added.

Broadbride told the show that she hopes Raygun herself will come along and see a performance.

Perhaps she’s already watched it and adored it so much that she didn’t feel the need to share her enthusiasm with me. That’s what I’m trying to convince myself happened. I’m not sure. She really should come, it’s such a good time.

In December, Gunn finally spoke up as a legal dispute arose concerning the musical portraying her story during the Paris Olympics.

Online criticism erupted following the decision, as The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Raygun’s lawyers sent a demand for a $10,000 fee coverage to a comedy club hosting their performance, due to legal costs incurred by Raygun.

In response to the online criticism following the allegations, there was a fresh development in the story as Raygun posted on Instagram to clear up the confusion. Furthermore, they announced that both parties involved in the disagreement had come to an agreement and resolved their differences.

Raygun shared in a recent video on social media that these past couple of weeks have been quite eventful. In essence, he described it as an exhilarating journey.

I’m thrilled to announce that we’ve successfully resolved all issues. My team has collaborated with Steph’s, and we’ve reached an accord. The musical is still happening as planned for her. She now has a fresh title. A revamped poster. And she can indeed embark on her tour with the show.

‘I’m really happy for her and I wish her all the best with the show and with the tour.’

Later on, the Olympian made it clear regarding the expenses connected to her legal matters, emphatically stating: “No one has asked for any compensation in this matter.

It seems there has been much discussion about the $10,000 since the very beginning. On day one, my legal team took action for me. They issued letters and requested a reply within a specific deadline.

‘They didn’t hear a response and we were worried that we might have to go to court.

I wanted to let you know that if we ended up in court, I was prepared to spend around $10k on legal fees. However, luckily for us, Steph’s declaration settled everything, so it never came to that.

Today, she expressed her regret and clarified some of the incorrect information and harmful remarks that have circulated recently.

We don’t intend to ask for any costs associated with this matter. I previously emphasized that it’s never been about the money, and that still holds true today – neither from Steph nor the comedy club. From our perspective, the issue has been resolved and we have no intention of initiating further legal proceedings. This was an intellectual property dispute, and now it’s been settled to our satisfaction.

In a 90-minute performance, the musical chronicles the breakdancer’s journey to the Olympics, accompanied by original songs such as “You May Dance Like a B-Girl, but You’ll Always Be a Woman to Me” and “I Could Have Triumphed, but I Strained a Muscle.

Broadbridge also took to Instagram to release a statement following the news.

She expressed her apologies to the Olympian, acknowledging any unfavorable reactions she may have faced online earlier. Then, she announced that the title of the show was now “Breaking: The Musical.

The revised poster for the show now features a kangaroo silhouette, replacing the previous one that seemed to mimic Raygun’s Olympic breakdance poses.

Broadbridge admitted once more to her 12,000 Instagram followers that she had failed to reach out to Raygun prior to crafting both the title and artwork, which incorporated the term ‘Raygun’ and her silhouette.

It’s important to clarify that I never intended for anyone to believe she was part of the project’s production. In fact, she has no involvement whatsoever with this project, past or present.

I’ve rebranded the program with a new title and image, and I won’t refer to either her name or the image in the future.

The performance made stops in Adelaide from February through March, followed by a run in Melbourne in April, and finally graced the stages of Sydney in May.

Broadbridge expressed regret, saying, “It’s unfortunate to hear that Raygun has encountered negative reactions due to the media focus on the cancellation of the preview for the musical.

‘The last thing I wanted was for anyone to experience hate or distress from the situation. ‘

The show’s poster claims it is ‘a completely legal parody musical’.

Raygun rose to fame last year following her performances at the Paris Olympics.

Despite receiving no points for her three performances at the Games, she’s now internationally recognized as a cult icon. Many have taken to emulating this Olympic celebrity during Halloween festivities.

Over the past few months, a 36-year-old individual has been spotted dining out with famous personalities like Boy George and Richard Branson. Moreover, during one of Adele’s performances, she was publicly praised by the singer herself.

Raygun expressed gratitude towards Broadbridge for her declaration, further mentioning that she aimed to permanently end this ordeal. Afterward, she extended an apology to her social media audience.

She acknowledged, “These past times have been quite challenging for me, and I must admit, I’ve found them difficult. However, I realize I’m not alone in this.

I realize that this situation has been challenging for Steph, her team, and many others involved, as well as numerous others. It was never my aim to inflict pain or discomfort on anyone.

In this entirely unfamiliar setting, I feel compelled to express my apologies for any pain or discomfort I may have unintentionally inflicted.

‘I assure you, it wasn’t done on purpose. Once more, I’d like to express my gratitude to those who have stood by me during this rollercoaster journey.’

Raygun expressed a strong desire to ‘bring the story to an end’ before expressing gratitude towards her supporters for their efforts in promoting optimism and goodwill.
