Ghostbusters Star Ernie Hudson Joins Boston Blue Spinoff as Law-Family Patriarch
In New York City, when something unusual occurs, residents turn to the Ghostbusters for help. Conversely, in Boston, on the spinoff of Blue Bloods titled Boston Blue, they’ll be reaching out to Danny Reagan, a newly recruited Boston Police Officer, and members of the prominent Silver family, who are also in law enforcement. Ernie Hudson, known for his role as Winston Zeddemore from the Ghostbusters series, has joined the cast of this spinoff, portraying the patriarch of the Silver family and a religious figure. Although ghosts won’t be causing trouble in Beantown, a familiar face who once fought them will take on a new character in the upcoming police procedural.
As reported by Deadline, actor Hudson has been cast to portray Reverend Peters, a well-respected pastor of an ancient Baptist church in Boston. This character is the head of the Silver family, known for his progressive and inclusive nature. He is the father of Mae Silver, Boston’s District Attorney, and the grandfather of Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), Superintendent Ashley Silver, and rookie patrol officer Isaac Silver. In the upcoming series “Boston Blue,” Detective Lena Silver will be partnered with Danny Reagan, played by Wahlberg. Hudson has been announced as a regular cast member for “Boston Blue,” which is set to premiere on CBS this fall in the time slot previously occupied by “Blue Bloods.
To date, Martin-Green and Hudson are the only cast members confirmed for the series, with Wahlberg also serving as an executive producer. Further cast announcements are expected soon. The series, titled Boston Blue, is produced by CBS Studios in collaboration with Jerry Bruckheimer. Ernie Hudson, known for his role as Winston across the Ghostbusters franchise, has reprised this fan-favorite character. However, he’s also busy with other projects, such as voicing Combat Carl in Toy Story 5, which is set to release in 2026.
It’s no surprise that news of the spinoff is delightful for fans of Blue Bloods, seeing as the show concluded in 2024 after running for 14 seasons. Throughout its 293 episodes, viewers grew attached to the Reagan family – Detective Danny Reagan, ADA Erin Reagan, Sergeant Jamie Reagan, Henry, Frank, Jackie Curatola, and many others. The entire family dedicated their lives to law enforcement, making them a significant influence in New York City. Blue Blood continued to be popular until it ended, with Donnie Wahlberg admitting that he and the cast did all they could to keep it going. In a recent interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Wahlberg called the series “the greatest blessing” and became emotional.
Ernie Hudson Was Once On An Episode Of ‘Blue Bloods’
Before it was revealed that Hudson would join the spinoff series, he made an appearance in one of the original series episodes as a temporary character. In the episode titled “School of Hard Knocks,” Hudson played Principal Darryl Ward. During this episode, Danny and Baez were trying to understand an incident at Ward’s school where a student was shot by a rival gang member in the schoolyard. The events escalated as a teacher was injured in another incident, causing Ward to question his ability to protect his staff and students. This episode attracted 9.32 million viewers.
