Andor Season 2’s Shocking Ending Makes Rogue One Even More Heartbreaking
In a surprising twist, the ending of Andor season 2 adds an extra layer of poignancy to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s bittersweet conclusion. Crafting a prequel for a prequel must have been quite a challenge, especially considering the importance placed on continuity in the Star Wars franchise. The task of seamlessly connecting Andor’s story to that of Rogue One, which itself was smoothly integrated into the original Star Wars film, required some plotlines and character development to be tailored to the wider franchise rather than Andor’s standalone narrative.
The placement of Andor within the Star Wars timeline set certain standards for the story, as it precedes Rogue One. Characters crucial to Andor aren’t featured in Rogue One, just as characters central to Rogue One aren’t seen beyond the second anthology film. This is largely because of the sequence in which these Star Wars productions were made. The writers aimed to make Andor’s conclusion harmonize flawlessly with Rogue One’s and, if possible, offer viewers a fresh emotional outlook. In my opinion, they accomplished this goal effectively.
We Expected All The Major Character Deaths In Rogue One
One remarkable aspect of “Rogue One” was its ability to make us emotionally invest in characters we knew were unlikely to survive until the end of the movie. For instance, Cassian was a high-ranking Rebel Alliance officer, and his mission would have been impossible without the help of his team. If they had somehow survived the Battle of Scarif, they would have earned the same recognition as Luke Skywalker and Han Solo did at the end of the original “Star Wars” film.
As a movie connoisseur, I found the characters in this cinematic masterpiece – Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor, Bodhi Rook, Chirrut Îmwe, Baze Malbus, and even K-2SO – uniquely crafted and multi-dimensional. They were not just heroes, but individuals with their own emotional baggage, humor, wit, and compassion. This made them relatable and made their eventual departures all the more poignant.
Entering Andor’s second season, I feared that fate would repeat itself for most of Cassian’s companions, victims of the galaxy’s grim destiny, but thankfully, there’s a glimmer of hope in the darkness.
Andor Was Set To Repeat That Pattern
In episode 3 of season 2 of “Andor,” the demise of Brasso sets the stage for viewers to anticipate that Cassian’s other loved ones might also meet an untimely end in the series. It was feasible to make the deaths of Bix, Wilmon, or even Vel surprising, despite the audience being on edge waiting for it to occur. The unique, year-skipping, twelve-episode structure of “Andor” allows for their possible deaths to happen at any juncture, and even then, it would still take viewers by surprise.
It’s worth noting that among Cassian’s associates, only Brasso and Luthen Rael met their end in Andor. On the contrary, Bix, Wilmon, Vel, and Kleya all managed to make it through the series. Choosing to kill off these characters would have been a straightforward solution for removing them from the narrative without creating complications in canon. However, the writers of Andor found alternative ways to explain their absence in Rogue One and the original Star Wars trilogy, as demonstrated by how they handled Bix’s character.
Bix’s Decision To Leave Makes Rogue One‘s Tragedy Even More Devastating
If Cassian had lost his loved ones before he died in Rogue One, it would still have been deeply affecting because the team’s self-sacrifice for a future they wouldn’t witness is heartrending on its own. As Luthen mentioned in Andor season 1, their actions were akin to missing out on a sunrise. Regardless of Cassian’s personal history, his emotional journey and the tragic consequences of his choices resonate with viewers.
In a different way of saying it: Bix’s choice to depart alters everything significantly. It’s heartbreaking not just due to the fact that she was his potential love, or because she abandoned him for the Rebellion and he couldn’t meet her again, or even because he didn’t know about the child he never got to know. While these aspects are painful, I believe Cassian’s story in Rogue One is even more heart-wrenching as he was deprived of witnessing the life Bix built for herself.
Ever since Dedra Meero and Syril Karn started pursuing Cassian, Bix has found herself in a dangerous predicament. She’s been subjected to torment, forced to abandon her homeworld, assaulted by an Imperial officer, left waiting anxiously for Cassian to return from his missions, unsure of his safety. The second season of Andor depicted the profound impact this situation had on her. She was unable to sleep, plagued by disturbing dreams. Even Luthen, who didn’t hesitate to use people for the Rebellion, understood that she couldn’t continue fighting under these circumstances.
In the aftermath of watching “Andor” and reflecting on “Rogue One,” I can’t help but feel a deep sorrow about Cassian’s fate. What makes it particularly poignant is the knowledge that he never got to experience the tranquility Bix had discovered – a peace that the Rebel Alliance was striving so hard to establish.
In the movie Rogue One, it seems he may have been aware of his impending death, but one can only imagine the emotions he would have experienced knowing that one of his dearest was not merely safe, but had found the comfort she yearned for so deeply. Could such knowledge have brought him tranquility?
Did thoughts of regret cross his mind when Vel proposed reaching out to her, to learn about her well-being? Did he believe he would have more time? It’s these lingering questions that make Andor’s finale particularly poignant and haunting.
