Rihanna’s Movie Flop ‘Battleship’ Hits Free Streaming—See Why Fans Are Shocked

Rihanna’s much-discussed film adaptation of a well-known board game, which underperformed at the box office, is set to become available for streaming starting June 1, completely free of charge.

In 2012, the film “Battleship” marked Rihanna’s first appearance in a feature movie, where she starred alongside Taylor Kitsch and Brooklyn Decker. This military science fiction movie, with roots in the popular Hasbro board game of the same name, follows a group of naval ships encountering an alien fleet during a series of exercises. To prevent global catastrophe, they are compelled to engage in combat against the extraterrestrial forces. In the USS John Paul Jones crew, Rihanna portrayed Gunner’s Mate Second Class Cora Raikes.

The movie titled “Battleship” was met with significant criticism from film critics and failed to generate substantial box-office earnings. With a production cost exceeding $200 million, the film’s total gross revenue was only $303 million. This implies that both Universal Studios and approximately $150 million incurred losses on this production. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie holds a 34% approval rating. Critics argue that despite its high cost, the film is overly loud, poorly written, and formulaic, making it less enjoyable than its original source material.

It seems that both Hasbro and Universal were putting high stakes on the movie “Battleship” to be successful. In conjunction with this, a video game connected to the film was simultaneously launched by Activision, which was developed by Double Helix Games for PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360. Additionally, Magic Pockets handled the versions for Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS. Meanwhile, Hasbro also introduced new variations of the classic “Battleship” game at that time, with an alien-themed edition.

In a surprising turn of events, Rihanna’s acting in the movie “Battleship” resulted in her receiving two contrasting awards. She was honored with the Teen Choice Award for “Choice Movie Breakout,” but she also received the Golden Raspberry Award (Razzie) for Worst Supporting Actress.

Rihanna’s Other Acting Gigs Have Performed Better than Battleship

Starting with her debut in the movie “Battleship,” Rihanna’s acting career could only progress upward as a musician-turned-actress. In 2013, she graced the screen in the apocalyptic comedy “This is the End,” written and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, portraying a fictionalized version of herself. Notably, her most notable film role so far has been providing the voice for a teenage girl in DreamWorks Animation’s 2015 comedy “Home.” This character formed a friendship with an outcast alien alongside Jim Parsons, famously known for his role in “The Big Bang Theory.

Rihanna has acted in other films such as “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,” Luc Besson’s 2017 space opera, which was the costliest independent movie ever made but also failed at the box office for Rihanna. She also appeared in the female-led edition of the “Ocean’s” series titled “Ocean’s 8.” In the near future, she will appear in a live-action/animated Smurfs film produced by Paramount Pictures.
