Glenn Ford’s Underrated Western You NEED to See!

If you think The Shootist is one of the greatest Westerns ever made, then you’ll find The Last Challenge a worthy continuation. However, it’s important to note that John Wayne did not participate in The Last Challenge, but this 1967 Western does share many similarities with the iconic 1976 film that marked the end of an era for Western legends. Similar to The Shootist, the movie stars a beloved figure from the Western genre in the main role – Glenn Ford. Throughout his lengthy career in Hollywood, Glenn Ford appeared in numerous films, with many of his best performances being in film noirs and Westerns.

Glenn Ford may not boast the iconic Western career of John Wayne, but he certainly left an indelible mark on the genre. One of his most notable contributions was the original adaptation of “3:10 to Yuma“. Besides this, he starred in several other compelling – though less celebrated – Westerns, such as “Cowboy“, “The Cimarron Kid“, and “The Violent Men“. Similarly, “The Last Challenge“, directed by Richard Thorpe, can be added to this list. Remarkably, its story bears a striking resemblance to that of “The Shootist“.

Glenn Ford Plays An Aging Gunslinger With A Target On His Back In The Last Challenge

Dan Blaine’s Legendary Reputation Puts Him In Great Danger

In the film “The Shootist,” John Wayne portrays J.B. Books, a seasoned gunslinger with an unmatched reputation who learns he has terminal cancer. Unwilling to accept this destiny, Books decides to face his end in a blaze of glory, deliberately provoking three men eager to claim the title of defeating the legendary gunfighter. The movie “The Last Challenge” presents a comparable narrative; however, it does not guarantee that its main character is mortally ill. In this film, Glenn Ford takes on the role of Dan Blaine, a marshal long past his prime, yet still revered as one of the best gunfighters in the region.

In both instances, it’s revealed that Dan Blaine’s exceptional skill with firearms becomes a disadvantage as he grows older in “The Last Challenge.” From the start, people seem eager to challenge him, seeking to establish their dominance. Regrettably, his age eventually constrains the extent of his shooting abilities.

As a passionate movie-goer, I find myself immersed in the gritty struggle portrayed in “The Last Challenge”. In this film, my character, Blaine, is pitted against Lot McGuire, a reckless and formidable gunslinger played by Chad Everett. This young hotshot is hell-bent on claiming the title of the best by taking down none other than me.

In this relentless confrontation, I must face off against McGuire’s threat while acknowledging the harsh reality that there will always be more like him lurking in the shadows. This brutal existence can only last so long for someone like me.

The Last Challenge Is A Great Western About A Hero Coming To Terms With His Mortality

The Last Challenge Was One Of The Last Westerns Glenn Ford Made

The central idea behind “The Last Challenge” is what gives it depth, enabling its leading actor to deliver a significant portrayal. Glenn Ford’s character, Dan Blaine, is recognized as the quickest gunslinger around, yet he acknowledges his decline from past glory. Although he isn’t as close to death as Books in “The Shootist,” the movie effectively communicates that our main hero is merely surviving on temporal grace.

This film doesn’t reach the same depth or serve as a poignant farewell to Glenn Ford’s acting career like “The Shootist” did for John Wayne, but it skillfully crafts a captivating story around its main character, leaving viewers wondering about Ford’s character’s destiny. In a similar vein to John Wayne’s final Western, the climactic confrontation between Blaine and Lot McGuire offers an unexpected resolution to the question posed throughout the film.
