Hacks Season 4: Ava’s Secret Expose of Deborah’s Affair Threatens Their Futures

WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Hacks season 4, episodes 7 & 8.

Based on Ava’s response in Hacks season 4, episode 8, “Witch of the Week,” it seems that her last resort against Deborah might be necessary. In this episode, Ava’s reaction to Deborah taking the late-night stage after dominating the overnight ratings is a blend of anger and fear. Ava is enraged by Deborah’s ruthless behavior in firing an executive like Winnie Hunt’s Helen, who has been relentless about developing a spin-off segment, among other reasons.

Apart from Ava, Deborah’s newfound influence due to Bob Lipka, the CEO of the media conglomerate that controls their network and Deborah’s late-night show, has left Ava quite apprehensive. Their ongoing conflict in the fourth season of ‘Hacks’ stems from an incident in season 3 when Deborah had a brief romantic encounter with the married Bob, which occurred before she learned from Jimmy in the season 3 finale that she would be getting her lifelong dream role as a late-night host. In an attempt to maintain her position, Ava warned Deborah that she might reveal their past indiscretion if Deborah failed to honor her promise and make Ava her head writer.

Hacks Season 4 Episode 8’s Ending Hints Ava Might Finally Expose Deborah & Bob Lipka’s Affair

Ava Has One Swift & Powerful Move Left To Knock Deborah Back Down To Earth

Initially, Ava was delighted for Deborah during episode 8 of Hacks season 4, as her revamped late-night show was thriving. Their plan to mix up the format by inviting guests who were personally significant to Deborah or with whom she had a connection, and shooting a day ahead for better promotion, proved effective. However, Ava’s admiration for Deborah began to waver when Winnie was abruptly fired immediately after the show climbed to the top of overnight TV ratings. Being well-acquainted with Deborah, Ava harbors suspicions that Deborah might have had a hand in Winnie’s dismissal.

Ava has consistently shown a forward-thinking and morally upright nature, sometimes to an extreme degree. She is the sole individual who has managed to engage Deborah on numerous topics, including why certain aspects of her previous comedy might be deemed insensitive or offensive by today’s standards.

Even though there are challenges, Deborah is successfully pursuing her lifelong ambition and is stronger than ever, making those trying to hinder her more susceptible. However, revealing Deborah and Bob’s affair might be the only way for Ava to bring Deborah down from her high pedestal. This action, though, would be akin to a honeybee’s sting and could potentially lead to Ava being expelled from LA.

What Deborah & Bob’s Affair Being Exposed Would Mean For Their Late-Night Show

Ava Would Really Be Hitting A Career Dead Man’s Switch By Exposing Deborah

If Ava chooses to reveal Bob and Deborah’s affair in public, it would be a harsh and irreversible move, as such disclosure could severely damage both their careers without affecting Bob’s. Given the history between Ava and Deborah, it seems uncharacteristic of Ava to betray Deborah at this juncture, which I believe she is not capable of doing. Instead, it appears more plausible that Ava will tire of Los Angeles and decide to return home to Waltham, Massachusetts, or possibly seek comfort in Deborah’s former home, Las Vegas.

I have a feeling that by the end of season 4 of “Hacks,” Ava might decide to leave Deborah’s show. Even though they’ve developed a unique bond, Ava seems to realize that she holds little value for Deborah if she can’t deliver material and align with her vision for the show, given its growing success. As Deborah has climbed the ladder of success in the twilight of her career, Ava played a significant role. However, now that Deborah has reached the pinnacle, there could be only a descent from here.

In essence, I believe Ava won’t betray Deborah in “Hacks” season 4, instead choosing to depart from the late-night show and potentially securing another writing position in LA. Marcus’s fleeting appearance in episode 7, where he enjoyed not being tied to Deborah’s location all the time, could hint at Ava’s impending shift in her role.
