Tom Cruise Teams Up for $200M Underwater Supernatural Thriller with John Wick Star

In a potential new collaboration, “Mission: Impossible” star Tom Cruise might join forces with the recent action hero from the John Wick series in a chilling supernatural thriller titled “Deeper”. The partnership was initially hinted at by director Doug Liman back in December 2024. The movie is rumored to depict the harrowing tale of an astronaut who undergoes a terrifying encounter during a deep dive into an uncharted ocean trench. This project could serve as their third joint venture, with Cruise and Liman previously working together on the sci-fi thriller “Edge of Tomorrow” and the action-comedy “American Made”.

According to Deadline’s latest report, it appears that Ana de Armas, star of Ballerina, may team up with Tom Cruise for an upcoming project. Sources suggest that they are currently undergoing diving training in preparation for this film, hinting at a potential collaboration. The estimated budget for the movie is expected to be around $200 million, though Cruise’s representatives have yet to comment on these reports.

What We Know About Tom Cruise’s Deeper

The Underwater Thriller Has Been In Development For Years

The project has been evolving since 2016, with its origins traced back to a spec script written by Max Landis, who is known for his work on Bright and Shadow in the Cloud. Originally, MGM studios took interest in it, intending for Kornél Mundruczó (of Pieces of a Woman fame) to direct and Bradley Cooper to star as the lead actor. However, subsequent phases saw the project pass to Baltasar Kormákur and Idris Elba, who was also the main character in Kormákur’s 2022 survival horror film Beast.

The report from Deadline additionally reveals that alongside Liman and Cruise, the director of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Christopher McQuarrie, is contributing to the film’s script. Given Tom Cruise’s affinity for performing realistic stunts, a skill both Liman and McQuarrie possess, it seems reasonable that Cruise might be advocating for him and his potential costar to engage in real deep-sea dive training as part of their character preparations.

Our Take On Cruise’s Next Collaboration With Doug Liman

The Pair Also Has An Ambitious Space Movie Planned

As a follower, I’m no stranger to taking on challenging tasks. Alongside Cruise and Liman, we’ve had long-nurtured dreams of creating an unnamed NASA film, in partnership with Space X, set in outer space. At the moment, the fate of that project is uncertain, but if the news about Cruise and de Armas readying for ‘Deeper’ is anything to go by, this upcoming thriller seems to be taking priority.

It’s not yet confirmed if she’s part of it, but given her strong performance at the box office so far, de Armas is clearly becoming a major attraction on her own. For instance, Ballerina is expected to earn around $30-$40 million in its opening weekend. This could make the prospect of working together on another potential blockbuster like Deeper even more enticing, as it might further challenge Tom Cruise’s abilities beyond what we’ve already seen him accomplish.
