Emerging independent filmmakers often claim the rights to their films. For instance, Quentin Tarantino owned “Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood” following his agreement with Sony, just as Jim Jarmusch owns many of his productions like “Coffee and Cigarettes.

In the year 2025, the original film “Sinners” had a record-breaking opening weekend with earnings of $45.6 million, followed by an impressive second weekend that pushed the total domestic gross to $100 million. Not long after, this Michael B. Jordan-led movie surpassed a significant milestone by amassing $200 million domestically in its fourth weekend – a feat not achieved by an original film since 2017’s “Coco.” Given these large numbers and the strong response from viewers to the vampire movie, it seems likely that its success will continue to grow.

Jonathan Handel posits that by 2050, if the way we consume movies evolves and includes formats like 3D, the director of ‘Creed’ might reap substantial earnings via licensing deals. Yet, if these advanced viewing methods materialize before Ryan Coogler gains ownership rights, ‘Sinners’ will remain under Warner Bros.’ control. They could opt to not release a 3D version or employ a “holdback” tactic that postpones certain rights.

If a sequel to “Sinners” is ever produced, Ryan Coogler would have complete control and earnings over it if it’s made 25 years from now. However, if Warner Bros. decides to release “Sinners 2” before 2050, film expert Jonathan Handel speculates that Coogler might not reap the benefits unless he’s actively involved in the project.
