Happy Gilmore
As a passionate cinephile, I felt compelled to express my deepest condolences upon hearing the news of one of my beloved on-screen partners’ demise. The star in question was none other than Morris the alligator, who graced the big screen alongside Adam Sandler in his illustrious acting career that spanned TV and film roles. The news of Morris’s passing was shared by Jay Young, owner of Colorado Gator Farm, in a heartfelt Facebook video. He expressed that while they knew this day would come eventually, they were still deeply saddened by the loss to old age.
Sandler expressed his sorrow over the news as well, using his personal social media platform to publish a heartfelt and lengthy tribute dedicated to the alligator. His post, which contained elements of his signature humor, read:
Farewell, Morris. We’ll surely miss your presence. You could be demanding towards directors, makeup artists, costume designers – essentially anyone with limbs. However, I understand it was all in the pursuit of film excellence. The day you refused to leave your trailer unless we delivered 40 heads of lettuce was a lesson I’ll never forget: never sacrifice art for convenience. I’ll always remember that moment at craft service when we shared the Three Musketeers bar and you gave me the larger half. That, in essence, is who you were.
Although your character’s beheading in the initial film prevented your appearance in the subsequent one, everyone enjoyed the thoughtful fruit basket and the amusing note. I will certainly miss the sound of your tail swishing through tall grass, your rough texture, but above all, I will miss your contagious laughter. Many thanks to Mr. Young for looking after you for so long, and farewell, dear friend.
Your character’s beheading in the first movie kept you from being in the sequel, yet we cherished the thoughtful fruit basket and the witty note that came with it. I’ll definitely miss the sound of your tail rustling through the high grass, your bumpy skin, but most of all, I’ll miss your infectious laughter. Thank you to Mr. Young for taking such good care of you throughout the years, and here’s wishing you a safe journey, old companion.
What a guy, and what a gator.
Morris the Alligator’s Hollywood Legacy
Morris’s notable role in “Happy Gilmore” was just one part of his acting career, which spanned much longer than many film stars. From 1976 to 2006, Morris established himself as a versatile character actor, particularly excelling in roles that demanded green, scaly, and towering (over nine feet tall) characters. His extensive resume boasts numerous movie appearances, including “Alligator 1 & 2”, “Dr. Doolittle 2”, “Blues Brothers 2000”, “Eraser”, and “Interview with the Vampire”.
Sandler’s recollections about the alligator are undeniably what will endure as Morris’ lasting testament, for not only did he touch the hearts of A-list celebrities, but also millions of film enthusiasts worldwide.
Looking on the bright side, it’s been confirmed that Adam Sandler will return to the golf course in “Happy Gilmore 2,” set to premiere on Netflix on July 25, 2025. Although Carl Weathers (Morris) won’t be part of this production due to reasons that are clear to anyone who’s watched the first film, Sandler will have some familiar co-stars by his side in this long-awaited sequel. These include Julie Bowen, Dennis Dugan, Christopher McDonald, and Ben Stiller, all reprising their roles from the original movie.
