Olivia Munn’s Mom Drama

It wasn’t until after Olivia Munn and John Mulaney had their first child together that Olivia’s mother first got to meet John.

44-year-old actress from “The Predator,” who surprised fans by expressing regret over the name she selected for her child, discussed this subject on Monday’s edition of Late Night with Seth Meyers.

In 2021, the star started dating a comedian, aged 42, and they had their son Malcolm by the end of that year in November. The couple also became parents to daughter Mei June, born through a surrogate in September 2024.

According to Munn’s explanation to Meyers and the audience, Malcolm was born a day before Thanksgiving, and at that time, his mother hadn’t yet met John.

Upon arriving at their home, Olivia’s mom, Dung Kim Schmid, came in carrying a suitcase. The sight of her seemed to bring back memories of beauty, yet she failed to greet John upon her arrival.

Afterward, the actress shared the amusing tale behind the picture of her baby son holding a turkey drumstick.

As a devoted follower of our unique family tradition, I started pulling out Frozen Butterball turkeys from my bag, then shared with Mulaney the story behind it.

John is told by her that it’s a special tradition in her family to give each newborn baby a drumstick during their first Thanksgiving as a symbol of celebration.

John told Olivia that he through the tradition was ‘cool’ but Munn herself was left perplexed.

The actress reminisced, “I thought, ‘That can’t be a tradition. What on earth is she referring to?'” At that moment, however, her mother firmly believed it was a custom practiced by everyone during their first Thanksgiving celebration.

In order to clarify things accurately, the famous Hollywood actress opted to reach out to her family members to see if they owned any photos spanning several years, depicting their shared tradition.

According to Munn, they replied, “Nope, she’s not telling the truth. It’s not accurate.” Seth humorously agreed, saying it was a ‘well-spun’ lie.

Additionally, Meyers displayed a charming picture for the crowd featuring a tiny Malcolm snuggled in a blanket, with a sizable turkey drumstick placed beside him.

In this image, John is seen with Malcolm. Mom picks up her turkey leg, places it beside him, taps his hand, and says, “Here begins a fresh tradition,” she shared, causing both Seth and the audience to erupt in laughter.

After their first child’s birth, John and Munn’s mother didn’t get acquainted initially; however, they have since formed a strong relationship.

In a recent chat on Today With Jenna & Friends, Olivia revealed that her husband and Kim share an exceptionally close friendship.

She shared that John maintains a physical list, specifically a notepad, containing Korean dramas and films they plan to watch together. She then marks each one as they watch it, and they both enjoy this shared activity.

In another part of her conversation during a late-night TV program, Olivia mentioned that she named her daughter Méi June after her mom. However, she later expressed remorse over this decision.

When host Meyers pointed out that she had named Mei June after her mother, she confessed, “Oh, I believed I had.

Mun disclosed that during a car journey, her mother told an apparently harmless untruth, which ultimately resulted in the origin of the name.

In a nutshell, Mei (with an accent above the ‘e’) is what her name means in Chinese, which translates to ‘plum’ in English. We’ve been pondering over what would make a fitting middle name for her.

In an unexpected moment during our car ride, my mother casually mentioned, “Fun fact, they often refer to me as ‘June.'” Now, for those wondering, my mother’s actual name is Dung, spelled as d-u-n-g.

She told me that many people refer to her as June. I asked her when this happens, and she explained, “Well, quite a few people actually call me June. That’s an Americanized version of my name, which is Dung in its original form.

In response to being asked if people call her June, she replied affirmatively, explaining that’s what everyone knows her by. It was later revealed that her middle name is Kim. So, I said okay.

A short while following their car journey, John suggested, “What a lovely name that would be for her, and a wonderful tribute to your mom. Why not call her Mei June instead?

Olivia expressed that she found it wonderful, while upon the baby’s birth, she disclosed via a group text that the child was called Mei June Mulaney, as this name was chosen in honor of her mother.

About an hour later, my mother arrived at the hospital, cradling our newborn in her arms. It hadn’t occurred to me that she had still not mentioned a name for the baby. So I asked, “Mom, what do you think we should call her?” She simply replied, “It’s alright,” drawing laughter from the crowd. (Munn)

Hold on a sec, you love the name? Really? I asked, and she replied, “It’s alright,” she said, revealing that her beloved grandmother’s name is Estelle.

In a surprising turn of events, Munn suggested to Kim, “I’ve been considering calling her Mei Estelle. Perhaps I might as well do so.” To which Kim responded, “You might want to consider a different name instead.” This left the crowd in awe.

The actress explained that her mother had been suggesting alternative names to rename the baby, which helped her understand why her mother was called June by others, originally.

One day, I suddenly realized something. You know my mom? She’s quite chatty. She chats and chats – once she even talked non-stop with me for half an hour about how she doesn’t talk much! (Munn humorously added)

Munn recalled that particular day when she learned we should address her as ‘June.’ During our drive, there were no words exchanged; instead, an eerie silence filled the vehicle until she spontaneously introduced herself as ‘June.’

In the end, the actress finally faced her mother and said, “Mom, it seems I’ve figured out what transpired. Was it on that particular day that you decided to tell this story about being known as June, although nobody has ever referred to you by that name?

When asked about my name, I replied, “Yes, they call me June.” And when questioned about the origin of this name, I shared, “Back in 1987, two women started referring to me as June.

I thought to myself, ‘Let’s keep it as June.’ I don’t plan on changing it. It’s named after my mother, but I do hope she won’t grow up to be as much of a liar as she is.” (This version maintains the original sentiment but rephrases for easier reading and understanding)

Over the past weekend, Munn also celebrated the Mother’s Day holiday.

In an Instagram post, the actress from The Newsroom shared a video featuring a paper entitled “Everything About My Mom” that her son Malcolm completed for a school assignment.

In the classroom, Munn was noticeably beaming as she lifted the worksheet high, while her small child peacefully rested on the floor.

She playfully said, “Malcolm gifted me 20 years ago for Mother’s Day,” humorously referring to him writing her age as 24 on the paper. Meanwhile, their three-year-old son presented his mother with a lovely drawing filled with flowers.

In the short reel, Mulaney seemingly was behind the camera as he filmed both Munn and Malcolm.

John asked, “Shall we include Malcolm in this photo? He’s lying down there on the ground.” (as John moved the camera towards their son)

In response, their oldest child jokingly said “No,” causing Olivia to lower herself next to him. With a wide grin on her face, she displayed the delightful presents he’d given her.
