Cillian Murphy’s near-perfect “powerful” Irish movie has been quietly added to Prime Video

In the United Kingdom and Ireland, the Irish drama starring Cillian Murphy titled “Small Things Like These” is now available on Amazon Prime Video.

Drawing inspiration from Claire Keegan’s novel, the film delves into the heart-wrenching tale of Ireland’s Magdalene laundries – these detestable institutions, operated by the Roman Catholic Church during the 18th to late 20th centuries, were a grim reality I can hardly forget.

In “Small Things Like These,” we follow the story through the eyes of Bill Furlong, a caring father and coal dealer, in 1985. As he unearths a heart-wrenching truth hidden within the local convent, his life takes an unexpected turn.

The movie “Small Things Like These” was warmly welcomed by critics upon its November debut, with a nearly perfect rating of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film “Small Things Like These” was called “remarkably potent” by Empire, while The Hollywood Reporter described it as both subtle yet impactful, and intimate yet broadly emotional.

Following the movie’s premiere, Murphy explained the somewhat unexpected conclusion, stating that it maintained the “intellectual brilliance of the novel” by leaving unclear what transpired after Bill took his stance.

He noted that people often hold vastly distinct perspectives, which is fascinating to ponder, as it seems to unfold endlessly. It’s hard to predict where it might lead.

As a captivated observer, I find this fascinating. To me, it seems like an early sign of the Church’s waning influence during that period.
