First reactions land for “astonishing” new Mission: Impossible movie: “A fitting finale”
In theaters next week, Mission: Impossible – The Last Call, has been praised as “amazing” and a “satisfying conclusion” for the franchise, potentially marking the end of Tom Cruise’s breathtaking escapades as Ethan Hunt.
It was stated that both “Dead Reckoning” and “The Final Reckoning” are considered the peak or climax of the series, yet writer/director Christopher McQuarrie hasn’t definitively ruled out additional installments in the future.
It’s clear that Mission: Impossible 8 serves as the culmination of the Dead Reckoning storyline, where we find Ethan and his IMF team persistently working to thwart Gabriel (Esai Morales) and a formidable AI entity called the Entity.

Prior to its debut at Cannes Film Festival tomorrow, a select group of viewers who’ve already watched Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning are voicing their opinions on social media about the latest film.
According to Fandango’s Erik Davis, “This film offers breathtaking action sequences that are second to none, while also unfolding a vast narrative with numerous references to previous Mission: Impossible films. It’s the largest, craziest, and most impactful Mission movie we’ve seen so far.
As a gamer, I’ve gotta say, this new installment blows Dead Reckoning out of the water! The stakes and tension are back with a vengeance, making this favorite sequel of mine all the more significant. There were a few story moments that felt brushed over, and let’s not forget about the biggest loose end in IMF history, but it still feels like a satisfying conclusion.
Initial enthusiastic responses to the film, titled “The Final Reckoning“, were described as “exciting, emotional, and fulfilling,” “exceptionally engaging,” and “spectacular.” However, not every review was entirely positive for the latest cinematic release.
In a nutshell, Germain Lussier from Gizmodo found the entry to be an unusual choice that doesn’t seem particularly action-driven within the franchise. He described it as lengthy, filled with plots, and somewhat repetitive, but when the good scenes occur, they are truly remarkable. Consequently, his overall feelings towards it are a bit conflicting, as there are both exceptional highs and disappointing lows.
Film reviewer Adam Patla mentioned, “When it doesn’t bombard you with nostalgic archive montages and puzzling edits, Mission Impossible turns out to be an enjoyable, though somewhat unimpressive, end to the series.
Some responses ranged from moderate to mixed, labeling “The Final Reckoning” as a “moderate entry” and “slow-paced, verbose, and excessively intricate”.
In “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” we see the return of actors such as Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Greg Tarzan Davis, and Pom Klementieff. Additionally, new faces joining the cast include Holt McCallany, Hannah Waddingham, and Tramell Tillman.
Additionally, you’ll find a familiar face returning to the scene – Rolf Saxon, once again playing William Donloe, the character he portrayed in the initial film. Similarly, Angela Bassett is back as Erika Sloane, having not appeared in “Dead Reckoning”.
Prior to its premiere, it’s been officially announced that the upcoming “Mission: Impossible” film is set to be the longest one yet in the series, boasting a remarkable running time of 169 minutes.
The movie “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” hits the big screens in the United Kingdom on May 21st, and in the United States on May 23rd.
