Iconic characters play a significant role in the series, making their appearance frequent throughout the games, films, and comics. Moreover, due to their immense power within the game world and rarity, it’s not surprising that fans are eager to find and appreciate these legendary figures.

Among numerous factors that contribute to greatness, a legendary character often excels in its history, attributes, and overall aesthetic appeal. With nine generations of games behind us, the race for the top spot is intense. To simplify the process, this ranking only includes official legendaries; we’re excluding Mythical and Paradox Pokémon to find the cream of the crop.

Pokémon Types: Dark/Grass; Dark/Ice; Dark/Ground; Dark/Fire

In the adventure of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the Treasures of Ruin questline falls short of expectations. Instead of an engaging quest, it feels like a chore, as Ms. Raifort provides exposition and then sets the player loose. This is quite different from the intricate quests found in Gen III, such as capturing the Regis. However, despite its lackluster delivery, the concept of Pokémon originating from cursed items, whose abilities lower the stats of all combatants, offers an intriguing twist to the gameplay experience.

The designs for Wo-Chien, Chien-Pao, Ting-Lu, and Chi-Yu are all unique blends of their distinct characteristics and the environments they occupy. These legendary Pokémon have shown competitive utility, although none of them are overpowered. In summary, this set of four is a strong group of legendaries with an intriguing backstory.

Pokémon Type: Psychic/Flying

Lugia boasts a unique appearance, featuring a design reminiscent of dragons but with a distinctly non-scaly texture and wings resembling hands or flippers. Its individuality is subtle yet impactful, reflecting the elegance of its earlier iterations. Notably, Lugia plays a significant role in the anime, particularly in the second movie where it assumes a major character position. Additionally, there’s an abundance of intriguing history surrounding Lugia as the Sea Guardian and the commander of legendary birds, contrasting with Ho-oh’s ties to the Johto beasts.

Although Lugia is an incredibly cool Pokemon, it doesn’t have many active roles within the game sharing its name and isn’t directly connected to the storyline. However, its uniqueness amidst this limited involvement showcases just how impressive Lugia truly is. Despite being a fantastic Pokemon, other legendary creatures tend to have greater impacts in the games.

Pokémon Type: Fairy; Fairy/Steel

The design of Zacian is incredibly stylish, with its blend of knight and noble wolf in its base form creating a streamlined Pokémon that becomes even more impressive when it transforms into its Crowned Form. A significant portion of Sword & Shield revolves around uncovering the history behind Zacian and its counterpart Zamazenta, making their appearance in the climax to join forces with the player and Hop all the more intriguing.

It’s intriguing that these legendary mascots can only be captured post-game rather than during the main game. This gives them a more enigmatic and otherworldly feel. Moreover, Crowned Zacian excelled significantly in competitive battling, making it stand out on this list compared to Zamazenta. While both characters share similar roles in the story, Zacian gets the edge due to its impressive performance in battles, which is one of the reasons it’s considered a top pick from Generation 8. In summary, Zacian was an exceptional addition to the pantheon of legends and a highlight of Gen 8.

In the latest Pokémon games, there’s been a greater emphasis on making players feel a bond with the legendary creatures, shifting them from mere powerful items to companions. Ogrepon epitomizes this change, being charming and playful, tagging along during gameplay, possessing a heart-wrenching past, and even having a record of lives taken! Could there be anything more appealing in a legendary sidekick?

One aspect that truly reinforces Ogrepon’s writing is that, ultimately, when she selects the player over Keiran, it comes across as her personal choice. The player can’t simply suggest letting Keiran apprehend her; she’s an autonomous entity who chooses her own path. Furthermore, it’s worth noting that Ogrepon’s unique Terastal forms set her apart, particularly because she contributes more to battles compared to Terapagos. All in all, Ogrepon is a fantastic companion and a valuable asset to the team.

Pokémon Type: Fairy

Among all Pokémon designs, Life Pokémon stands out for its exquisite elegance, skillfully integrating the “X” motif into a statuesque deer figure that surpasses expectations. When in active mode, the multihued crystals adorning its horns are nothing short of breathtaking. It embodies the essence of an otherworldly, fairy-like giver of life and undeniably ranks among the most captivating.

In the games X & Y, Xerneas’s character development isn’t as extensive compared to other games, but the anime and manga expand upon its role a bit more. Rather than just serving as the power source for the Ultimate Weapon, it becomes more significant in these alternate narratives. As for shortcomings, its design is impressive and its signature move, Geomancy, was quite powerful in competitive battles, which somewhat compensates for the lack of character depth.

Pokémon Type: Water

Suicune, another legendary Pokemon, boasts an eye-catching appearance with its perpetually flowing mane and ribbons. In motion, it resembles a swiftly moving river. Additionally, Suicune plays a somewhat more significant narrative role in Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver compared to Ho-oh and Lugia in their respective games, which sets it apart.

In this movie, Suicune is portrayed as the protector of the forest, always commanding respect just like any legendary character would. Its unique design speaks volumes about it, and it has consistently carried this iconic essence throughout its various game appearances and beyond. To put it simply, there’s not much more to say; Suicune’s appeal is self-explanatory.

Pokémon Type: Dragon/Flying

It’s no surprise at all that Rayquaza appears on this list. Its impressive design boasts one of the finest shiny variations, and its Mega Evolution, which uniquely doesn’t require a Mega Stone, is quite powerful. Furthermore, as the third-version legendary Pokémon, it paved the way for all the others. The scene where it swoops down from the sky to make Groudon and Kyogre cease their fighting with a single glance is truly epic, even when presented in Game Boy Advance graphics.

In the aftermath of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the player demonstrates their worth to Rayquaza and subsequently takes it on a journey into space for a battle against Deoxys. Rayquaza, a breathtaking fusion of a legendary creature and a rocket, always leaves an impact whenever it makes an appearance.

Pokémon Type: Ghost/Dragon

Giratina represents the initial legendary Pokémon concept that delves into the realm of horror, and it does so impressively. Since its ominous debut from the Distortion World in Platinum, Giratina has been an imposing figure in the games. Additionally, its appearance as a boss battle in Legends Arceus is noteworthy due to having an additional HP bar, making it quite challenging. This feature, along with the powerful soundtrack, results in one of the game’s most thrilling moments.

Contrary to its fearsome appearance and rumors of violence, Giratina is surprisingly benevolent, as demonstrated when it thwarted Cyrus’s plans to destroy the world in Platinum. This unexpected kindness adds depth to its character and makes its role in the games all the more intriguing.

Pokémon Type: Psychic

Mewtwo made it onto our list because he’s the first legendary Pokémon ever created. Even though his surprise has been spoiled due to numerous appearances over the past 30 years, the experience of uncovering the destroyed lab and its details about Mewtwo’s origin, followed by defeating the League and finding him in Cerulean Cave, remains an exciting journey. This part of the game is particularly engaging as it offers a more complex narrative than the straightforward storytelling found in Pokémon Red and Blue games, which was reasonable considering the era they were developed in.

The backstory of Mewtwo was further developed in the initial movie, making an entire generation of kids see it as an absolute badass. Since then, Mewtwo has essentially become the series’ mascot or, at the very least, one of the most iconic legendary Pokémon. The original definitely commands some recognition.

Pokémon Type: Psychic/Steel; Psychic/Ghost

In the series, Solgaleo and Lunala are the initial and most successful efforts at creating powerful, enigmatic creatures that are deeply rooted in a region’s folklore as both legendary beasts and personal Pokémon for the player. Initially, Nebby, their Cosmog form, isn’t particularly useful, accompanying Lillie to various shrines. However, Nebby exhibits a keen interest in battles and shows a protective nature towards Lillie and the player, subtly revealing some character traits even though it’s not combat-ready. After numerous journeys, including saving Nebby from Aether Paradise and evolving into Solgaleo or Lunala, Nebby assists the player in battling either Lusamine or Necrozma, though they ultimately lose the final battle.

Later on, Lillie requests the player to care for Nebby, leading to a heartwarming ending in the credits as Nebby snuggles up to Lillie’s face. Meanwhile, Solgaleo and Lunala are exceptionally well-crafted legendary Pokémon, not just visually appealing but also resonating with players emotionally, making them stand out among others in the series.
