Hulu’s Mid-Century Modern is a full house of belly laughs and perpetually missing Fig Newtons.

If you combined elements from “The Golden Girls” with hints of “The Birdcage,” and added a generous dose of arid Southwestern charm, you’d be getting quite close to the essence of this charming, heartfelt comedy.

When a man finds himself alone in his stylishly designed mid-century modern home in Palm Springs, adorned with elegance and luxury, accompanied only by his mother, he might wonder about alternative situations. Apart from the popular idea of purchasing a dilapidated motel to transform into an eccentric mix of vintage and high-end appeal for the flamboyantly fashionable, Nathan Lane’s character decides to ask two of his closest friends to join him instead!

After the departure of their friend George, Bunny (Nathan Lane), Arthur (Nathan Lee Graham), and Jerry (Matt Bomer) find themselves drifting without direction, both in their personal lives and their bond of friendship. As unattached individuals, the thought of sharing a living space initially appears exciting; however, they soon encounter the various challenges that come with cohabitation. One might wonder what could potentially cause trouble in this new arrangement.

In simpler terms, the TV series titled “Mid-Century Modern” was produced by Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, who are well-known for their work on “Will and Grace“. This show was also executive produced by Ryan Murphy and directed by James Burrows. The pilot and all episodes from Season One were made available for streaming simultaneously on Hulu and Disney+ on March 28th, 2025. As of now, there’s no word about a second season, but fans are optimistic due to the show’s popularity. In fact, it was the tenth most-watched series from March 27th to April 1st and ranked #11 on Hulu’s “Top 15 Today” list published on April 2nd.

Character Analysis:

Bunny Schneiderman, a Jewish gay man, runs a successful business and is known for his affectionate relationship with his mother Sybil. Despite the apparent stereotypical guilt-ridden bond between them, their connection is deeply loving, though tinged with guilt – a common trait in families. Bunny has an unusual fondness for Fig Newtons, which becomes a recurring joke throughout the series.

Jerry (Bomer), a former Mormon and flight attendant, is often slow to catch on but is a true friend who is always supportive and kind. He’s a bit spacey, but his slow wit belies his loyalty. Trinity the Tuck would call him “I Live!”, reflecting his ability to persevere.

Arthur (Graham) exudes an air of fierce elegance, with a no-nonsense attitude and a sharp fashion sense. However, beneath this tough exterior lies a heart brimming with empathy and understanding. Like Sybil, Arthur presents a sassy demeanor but is quick to lend a helping hand when needed. Additionally, he’s capable of managing Mindy, which speaks volumes about his resilience.

It’s remarkably impressive, even iconic, for a series with just ten episodes to pack such a punch with its wit, emotion, and quick-witted humor (zingers). Beyond being impressive, it’s vital that we’re offered this entertainment – a portrayal of strong friendships, makeshift families, and unwavering support. Moreover, we could always use more of Richard Kind in our viewing experience.

In a series set amidst the vibrant lives of three close friends, “Mid-Century Modern,” filmed with a live audience, stands out for its genuine humor and emotional depth that can leave you in tears (particularly episode nine). The talent behind the scenes – writers, actors, and crew – is evident in this exceptional show that delivers laughter and poignancy in equal measure. We, as viewers, crave even more of it.
