Sydney Sweeney’s Barbarella Remake: Why the Long Wait Could Be Worth It!
Despite three years without much news about its production, the filmmaker has recently given an upbeat update on their remake of a well-loved sci-fi movie. Previously known for supporting roles in shows like The Handmaid’s Tale, Sharp Objects, and Once Upon Time In Hollywood, Sweeney gained significant attention with her breakout role on HBO’s teen drama series Euphoria. In this series, Sweeney takes on the character of Cassie Howard, a popular student at East Highland High School who grapples with gossip about her past relationships and additional complications in her love life.
Beyond her current role in “Euphoria”, Sydney has made appearances elsewhere too. She starred in the initial season of “The White Lotus” and the movie spin-off of Spider-Man titled “Madame Web”. In 2023, she took on a double role – acting and producing a romantic comedy named “Anyone But You”, where she and Glen Powell played former lovers who had to pretend to be a couple at a wedding due to unwanted attention.
Upcoming projects for Sydney include the suspenseful films “Echo Valley” and “The Housemaid”. She is also set to star in a biopic focusing on the life of boxer Christy Martin.
Sweeney’s Barbarella Remake Is Still In Development
The Star Is Committed To The Reimagining
1968 saw the theater premiere of Roger Vadim’s film adaptation of Jean-Claude Forest’s comic series, “Barbarella.” Stepping into the iconic role was none other than Jane Fonda, who brought the titular space explorer to life. With a mission to rescue a scientist from a distant galaxy and prevent him from unleashing a weapon that could spell doom for Earth, Barbarella embarked on an intergalactic adventure. Critics may have been underwhelmed by its script at first, but the film’s stunning production values and imaginative visuals ensured that “Barbarella” would become a cult classic. Over time, its more campy elements would foster a growing appreciation for this timeless cinematic gem.
In 2022, Sweeney was attached to Sony’s latest attempt to bring Barbarella back for a modern audience as an executive producer and leading star. However, despite three years of silence, Sweeney assured Empire that development for Barbarella was still pressing on, with her not only having recently discussed the movie’s script in a meeting but also stating that it is a project that she is dedicated to. Check out Sweeney’s full response below:
I recently visited London for a discussion about a plot and screenplay. I can’t reveal much detail, but let me tell you, this project is shaping up to be an incredibly enjoyable and grand spectacle. The journey is lengthy, and I believe many underestimate the time it takes to bring some projects to fruition, but trust me, it will be worth the patience.
Is Barbarella another item on your bucket list?
Yes, it is! That’s what I’m saying! My thirties, I’ve really got to step it up!
Our Thoughts On Sweeney’s Barbarella Production Update
Scheduling Issues May Be Holding Production Back
It’s no surprise that there might be apprehension about whether Sydney Sweeney’s production of Barbarella could face the same hurdles as past unrealized sequels and remakes. However, it’s worth noting that Sydney has been immersed in various projects, both on and off-screen, and director Edgar Wright is currently collaborating with her former co-star on a fresh take of The Running Man. Sydney’s recent actions suggest that she and the director are maintaining contact and seem to be biding their time until schedules permit them to proceed with Barbarella more confidently.
