Cage REJECTED Carrey?! You Won’t BELIEVE Why!
In 1994, the hit buddy comedy movie “Dumb and Dumber” made its debut in cinemas, achieving tremendous success. The film raked in an impressive $247 million at the box office, far surpassing its production budget of $17 million. Over time, it has become one of the most beloved comedies from that period, cherished by many moviegoers for its hilarious lead actors, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels.
Initially, before Daniels got the part, there was a possibility that Cage could have starred as Harry Dunne opposite Carrey in “Dumb and Dumber.” In an interview with The Guardian, Cage mentioned that Carrey wanted him as his co-star, but there was a major hurdle. During that period, Cage was gearing up to film the acclaimed 1995 movie “Leaving Las Vegas,” forcing him to choose between the two roles. In the end, he’s content with the decision he made.
Whenever someone asks if I ever wished it could have been me in that film, my answer is always no. You see, Jim Carrey once approached me about the role, we were both at the Chateau Marmont, rehearsing for ‘Leaving Las Vegas’ – a project that clashed with ‘Dumb and Dumber.’ In retrospect, I’m grateful they made their film and I’m thrilled for them. But I believe I made the right decision sticking with my path.
Although he didn’t get the chance to act alongside Carrey in a well-known comedy, it was still a wise choice for Nicolas Cage to take on the lead role in Leaving Las Vegas instead. This movie would go on to be one of Cage’s most acclaimed performances, earning him a Golden Globe Award, and it continues to be one of his most beloved films even 30 years later.
Fans might think that the selection of Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels for their roles in “Dumb and Dumber” turned out to be a stroke of genius. The compatibility between them was a key factor in making the movie so entertaining, and it’s possible that the film wouldn’t have been as successful if Nicolas Cage had played Harry instead. In the end, “Dumb and Dumber” became such a hit that it led to additional films and even an animated TV series.
The Follow-Up Films Are Not as Popular
In the year 2003, they put out a film titled “Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd“. This movie featured Eric Christian Olsen and Derek Richardson playing Lloyd and Harry, while Bob Saget, a renowned comedian who later passed away, gave one of his standout performances. Although it didn’t do blockbuster business, earning less than $40 million against a production budget of $19 million, it still had its own appeal.
In 2014, a fitting follow-up titled “Dumb and Dumber To” hit the screens. This sequel featured the return of Carrey and Daniels to reenact their iconic roles, yet it didn’t garner the same level of acclaim as the initial film. Similar to its prequel, it received unfavorable critiques, but it was a commercial triumph, grossing approximately $170 million with an investment of just $50 million.
