10 Brutal DC Movie & Show Deaths That Haunt Us Years Later
The DC Universe is known for its intense and haunting death scenes that linger in your memory after the movie ends, setting it apart as the more mature and ominous of the two major comic publishers. Although Marvel can also be dark at times, its stories generally cater to a broader audience. Nevertheless, the DCEU has taken some unexpectedly grim turns.
Initially, DC film adaptations and series focused on optimism and humor, creating a stark contrast from their grim original stories. However, as the 80s and 90s approached, they started veering towards a more somber tone. The introduction of the DCEU marked the complete materialization of this darker concept, featuring some of the most chilling and twisted death scenes ever witnessed in superhero cinema.
10. Starro Dies Via Javelin & Rats In The Suicide Squad
As a passionate cinephile, I’ve always been drawn to the macabre and the offbeat, especially in superhero genres and horror films. So, when James Gunn, now at the helm of DC Studios, took on directing The Suicide Squad, it was evident that his roots were deeply embedded in the gruesome and intense style he brought to the table. Yet, what sets Gunn apart is his unique ability to seamlessly blend the dark and gritty with the absurdly comical.
In a rather gruesome turn of events, Starro the giant alien starfish meets its demise in an equally brutal fashion. Harley Quinn impales it with a javelin through its eye, and then a swarm of rats devours the entire creature. This scene is undeniably terrifying, but fitting for the movie, and stands out as one of the most gripping and memorable deaths from the DC Extended Universe.
9. The Cow’s Death In Peacemaker Season 1’s Ending Gets Gross Very Quickly
In the show “Peacemaker,” the cow served as a food source for the alien race that sought to influence human minds. This peculiar creature was kept hidden beneath the Earth. Although these aliens expressed a desire for coexistence and harmony with humans, Peacemaker prioritized the safety and liberty of his companions over this unusual species.
With that, the Cow suffered a gruesome fate, first being pierced, then having its organs removed violently, and likely enduring an excruciatingly painful demise. The sight of the internal organs spilling out was nothing less than revolting, yet it’s typical of Gunn’s style in his work. Despite the shocking nature of the scene, it effectively conveyed the message of victory.
8. Sabbac’s Death In Black Adam
Black Adam‘s arrival on the DCEU scene happened at an inconvenient juncture, right before it was revealed that the universe would undergo a reboot. Despite this timing, the team wholeheartedly supported the film when it released. The intention behind the movie was to reignite the enthusiasm among DC fans and kick off the next phase. And indeed, the film lived up to its promise, delivering without reserve.
In the fierce battle against Sabbac, Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam demonstrated an indomitable strength, ultimately proving decisive by dismembering the demon from head to lower body. Despite the presence of the Justice Society of America, it was Black Adam who delivered the crushing blow. The scene is thrilling, though the surrounding lava serves as a buffer against its full intensity; it remains a gripping spectacle nonetheless.
7. The Alpha Team In Suicide Squad Got Slaughtered
In the opening scenes of “The Suicide Squad“, the film deceives viewers by presenting an entire team of characters who were heavily featured in the movie’s promotional materials. Yet, within mere moments of landing on the beach, these heroes meet a gruesome end due to a betrayal. The scene depicts their heads being blown off, riddled with bullets, and completely destroyed.
Although the unexpected twist brought laughter, it’s undeniably somber with its intense violence and ruthlessness. The film’s grim atmosphere and lack of trustworthy characters emphasize its mature theme, further proving that Gunn once again nailed it with this production.
6. Lois Lane Becomes Ash And Bones In Zack Snyder’s Justice League
Zack Snyder aimed to create a distinctive dark and intense universe for DCEU. Rather than focusing on light-hearted actions and amusement, he wanted to portray the gravity and repercussions of characters possessing powers far exceeding typical abilities. Consequently, death is a recurring theme in his films.
In the realm of cinema, few deaths leave a lasting impact quite like the one suffered by Lois Lane in Superman. Though the tragic event itself remains unseen, its consequences are profoundly felt, serving as a stark reminder of the gravity of the situation. As Superman stumbles upon the charred remnants of his beloved Lois, it’s not just the hero who feels the blow – hope itself seems to crumble. This heart-wrenching moment resonates deeply with audiences, leaving fans across the globe mourning the loss of a beacon in Clark Kent’s life.
5. Zod Gets His Neck Snapped By Superman In Man Of Steel
In my critique as a movie enthusiast, I must commend Zack Snyder for setting an intense, brooding tone in the film “Man of Steel” from its very onset. Here, Superman finds himself locked in mortal combat with Zod, a fellow Kryptonian, to safeguard his adoptive home and the people who dwell therein.
As Superman tirelessly strives to quell this foe without transgressing any moral boundaries, Zod relentlessly pushes him to the brink of despair. At one point, Superman is forced to acknowledge that he has no other recourse but to eliminate his adversary once and for all.
In a rare departure from his usual conduct, Superman, instead of sparing lives as he often does, seizes Zod’s head forcefully in his hands, executing a sharp twist that breaks his neck. This act of violence and permanence marks a significant turning point in the beginning of the DCEU, shaping not only Superman’s character but also the broader narrative of the DC Extended Universe.
4. Batman Mercilessly Takes Down Mercenaries In Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice
Additionally, it’s not only Superman who finds himself compelled to disregard his own principles. In the movie “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,” we see Bruce Wayne, also known as Batman, suffer significant loss. This tragic event leads him to become more cautious, anxious, and disillusioned about adhering to moral guidelines. Unlike before, where he held back when using force, Batman now acts with ruthless violence and aggression.
It’s most evident during a confrontation in a warehouse where he ruthlessly defeats a gang of ordinary men, resorting to extreme measures such as shooting his grappling hook to topple a crate onto one man’s head. Any trace of adhering to rules has vanished, and Batman is now guided solely by his instincts. The outcome is chilling.
3. Nina Dies For Nothing In Creature Commandos
The first installment in the DCU, titled “Creature Commandos,” debuted in 2024. One of the most poignant scenes from this series remains Nina Mazursky’s tragic demise at its end. Despite the team primarily consisting of monsters and outcasts, Nina was a compassionate soul. The heart-wrenching twist comes when she is coerced by her new companions to attempt assassinating Princess Ilana, only to discover in that moment that her efforts were futile.
Indeed, Princess Ilana was as monstrous as Rick Flagg Sr. suspected, yet Nina didn’t have to perish to manage her tyrannical rule. When The Bride takes revenge on her, it provides some solace, but it remains one of the saddest deaths in a DC production so far.
2. King Shark Rips A Soldier In Two In The Suicide Squad
In the movie The Suicide Squad, just as Black Adam ripped apart a demonic creature, King Shark is shown tearing his adversary apart. Unlike Black Adam’s neat and tidy dismemberment, King Shark’s tearing is messier. Worth noting, he performs this gruesome act on a human soldier, which is quite distressing to witness.
In The Suicide Squad, this particular scene might be among the most impactful, possibly even surpassing all other scenes directed by Gunn within his DC series. It undeniably showcases the immense power of King Shark as a character. Additionally, it’s significantly more violent, with blood spraying and the tearing apart of non-uniforms. Essentially, it leaves a lasting impression as one of the most gory scenes in the film.
1. Sivana’s Father And The Board Are Ripped Apart By The Seven Deadly Sins In Shazam
To conclude, let me say that Shazam is predominantly a humorous take on the superhero genre. The movie maintains a more playful atmosphere, and its protagonist is a boy who magically turns into an adult with extraordinary abilities. Although it does include some suspenseful scenes as it delves into Sivana’s story, overall it’s an enjoyable watch filled with lots of laughter and wit.
It’s quite shocking when the movie reveals Sivana bursting into his father’s building, challenging his father and the board, and subsequently inviting the Seven Deadly Sins to devour the board members. Although some of the events unfold through a frosted glass window, the violence and impactfulness of the scene are not diminished by this slight separation. The intensity persists, culminating in one of the most gruesome death scenes in the DC Universe.
