Why Hating ‘The Phantom Menace’ is a Mistake, Explained
Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, penned and helmed by George Lucas, stands as one of the least favored films in the Star Wars franchise, a series renowned for its numerous movies, shows, games, and literature. Despite the varying opinions among fans, there’s a significant number who share the sentiment that this prequel is the most disliked. However, some criticism may be misplaced.
A Long Wait in a Galaxy Not Too Far Away
Before “The Phantom Menace” premiered, the movie was already under immense pressure to deliver, given its predecessor, “Star Wars,” had grown into a cultural juggernaut with an enormous fanbase. Since the debut of “Episode IV – A New Hope,” “Star Wars” has become a pop culture icon, and the prequels, which were years in development, would be compared to the original trilogy’s triumphs.
Critics and fans alike found the gradual revelation of Darth Vader’s past and the expansion of the Galactic Empire to be widely despised. The Force, once a mystical energy that surrounded Jedi Knights, was now seen as a genetic trait linked to specific bacteria in one’s bloodstream. Characters like Jar Jar Binks were greeted with strong animosity, while the groundbreaking visual effects from the original series were overshadowed by excessive use of CGI. Many fans were displeased with the extensive rewrites, a prolonged segment dedicated to pod racing, and the somewhat underwhelming portrayal of Anakin Skywalker by Jake Lloyd.
Let the Kids Have Fun…
When assessing a film, a question that frequently arises is, “For whom was this movie created?” The strong negative reaction towards The Phantom Menace from fans who had followed the original Star Wars trilogy could be attributed to the significant change in tone they perceived between the originals and the prequels by Lucas. Nevertheless, it’s crucial to acknowledge that The Phantom Menace was designed primarily for young audiences. Anakin Skywalker experiences many of the challenges and lessons that children often face before reaching adolescence. Through his journey, he learns about competition, understanding the difference between good and evil, leaving home for education, and preparing to navigate the world ahead.
The primary criticisms directed towards The Phantom Menace often center around elements designed primarily for younger viewers’ entertainment. A key example is the pod racing scene in the film. It’s essential that children have a character they can identify with, one who is of their age group. When this character engages in activities typically reserved for adults, such as pod racing and eventually piloting a spaceship, it fosters the belief that they too can accomplish tasks beyond their years.
In “The Phantom Menace”, certain changes like Anakin constructing C-3PO demonstrate the character’s intelligence and creativity, emphasizing the significance of creativity in shaping a child’s development. Furthermore, describing the Force as bacteria in the bloodstream provides an easier-to-grasp explanation for children, who may not yet fully grasp complex spiritual concepts introduced in “A New Hope”. Additionally, more animated character designs cater to younger audiences, particularly those who enjoy cartoons and animated content.
What’s commendable about The Phantom Menace is more related to its purpose rather than its specific content. Star Wars has moved beyond being just a space opera or sci-fi series and has evolved into modern mythology. The Phantom Menace was instrumental in introducing a whole new generation to the universe of the Jedi, Sith, and the saga set in a distant galaxy. Many kids who watched The Phantom Menace in theaters became die-hard Star Wars fans, discovering the original trilogy and other elements of the mythology. The sense of escape and folklore are vital components of any culture. The Phantom Menace served as a gateway for many who would later gaze at the stars and envision a world beyond our own.
The Phantom Menace is currently streaming on Disney+.
