What Really Happened to the Torchwood Team? Shocking Truth Revealed!

The captivating series, Torchwood, serves as an enthralling spin-off from the renowned show, Doctor Who. Regrettably, it doesn’t span as long as one might hope. Many viewers who recognize Captain Jack Harkness but are unfamiliar with his show often ponder about the fate of Torchwood Three’s members. The Torchwood organization is initially presented in “The Army of Ghosts,” a truly exceptional story within the annals of Doctor Who. Nevertheless, that depiction is of Torchwood One, whereas the team portrayed in the Doctor Who television spin-off hails from Torchwood Three, and they are stationed in Cardiff.

Regardless of the incidents at Canary Wharf in “Doomsday,” Jack strives to manage the branch in a manner that would make the Doctor approve. The Torchwood Three team, comprising some of the most exceptional and captivating characters in the Whoniverse, sadly, has only one member who experiences a relatively content ending. Although this Torchwood period is now merely cherished recollections, it’s crucial to understand these characters’ identities and the events that unfolded for them.

6. Suzie Costello

Dead (Twice)

Indira Varma’s character Suzie Costello is exceptionally well-portrayed yet underutilized on screen, a decision that becomes understandable given her tragic fate in the initial episode. Suzie, unfortunately, met an untimely end in ‘Torchwood’, but her demise paved the way for Gwen Cooper to join the team. Suzie is intelligent, resourceful, and deeply invested in unraveling the mysteries of alien technology she encounters at work. However, Suzie’s relentless curiosity takes a dark turn as it leads her to commit murders, driven by her desire to experiment with the resurrection gauntlet.

In the second half of season 2, had it not been for Suzie’s research on the Glove, Owen’s story might have unfolded quite differently. Following her confession to Gwen, Suzie tried to assassinate Jack, but due to his unique immortality (a trait significant in Jack’s role as The Face of Boe in Doctor Who), he merely stood back up. Finding herself trapped, Suzie ultimately chose to end her life within Roald Dahl Plass. However, she does reappear in the episode titled “They Keep Killing Suzie” from season 1.

After a string of mysterious killings within the city, the investigative group employs the Glove to interrogate a deceased woman named Suzie. Jack then revives her. However, things don’t go as planned, as Suzie abducts Gwen, attempts to sacrifice herself for Gwen, tries to use the Glove to save her terminally ill father, and ultimately is euthanized by the team at the end of the episode. Fortunately, Suzie’s character development is further explored in the extended content of Doctor Who and Torchwood, even though these narratives take place prior to her demise.

5. Owen Harper

Dead (Twice)

Prior to starring in “Beetlejuice 2” and “Game of Thrones,” the actor known for playing Karl Tanner and Priest was already recognized for his role as Dr. Owen Harper on “Torchwood.” Despite his character’s challenging personality, many have grown fond of Owen. Known as the medical officer of Torchwood Three, Owen is quick-witted, blunt, and occasionally arrogant, giving off a rude demeanor. However, beneath this facade lies a man who is struggling. This is vividly portrayed in “Fragments,” an episode that explores Owen’s recruitment into the Torchwood organization. During surgery on a patient, Owen discovers an alien parasite, which Jack Harkness later conceals. Later, Jack invites him to join Torchwood at the woman’s funeral, offering him a chance to belong to something greater amidst his pain.

In the first season, Owen’s character is not particularly likable. He becomes involved in an affair with Gwen, despite her having a boyfriend, showing little concern. Prior to the start of the series, he also has casual relationships with Suzie and Diane, a woman from 1953 who arrives through a rift. Furthermore, Owen sometimes mistreats Tosh, even though he is aware of her feelings for him. However, there are instances where he acknowledges his behavior and strives to improve as a friend and colleague towards Tosh.

In the series “Reset,” biochemist Aaron Copley shoots and kills Owen. However, Martha Jones, who happens to be present, fails to revive him. Instead, Jack brings him back to life using a mysterious artifact called the Glove. To everyone’s surprise, instead of just returning for a brief moment, Owen stays conscious, transforming him into an undead character. This unique revival method is one of the most imaginative in television history, but it turns out that his new life doesn’t last long.

Following several instances where Owen appears alive but deceased, he meets his end once more in “Exit Wounds” by locking himself within a nuclear power plant to prevent a catastrophe. It’s heartbreaking that Tosh conceals her own passing during their farewell conversations over the intercom, and Torchwood starts to decline significantly after this point.

4. Toshiko Sato

Dead

Initially appearing in the TV series “Doctor Who” during the significant season 1 event called “Aliens of London,” the character Toshiko Sato makes her debut. In this episode, she inspects a deceased pig, where she encounters the Ninth Doctor for the first time. Although her name isn’t spoken in this particular episode, Tosh alludes to this moment in “Torchwood” season 2. Throughout her journey on “Torchwood,” Toshiko’s story is emotional yet inspiring – a tale that can be both heartbreaking and powerful at times. As a young woman, Tosh is coerced into stealing blueprint plans for a sonic modulator and constructing it after her mother is taken hostage.

After her arrest and imprisonment, she encounters Jack. Despite being severely traumatized, these occurrences lead Tosh to become a member of Torchwood Three and regain her freedom. For the remainder of the series, Tosh’s love life is quite unfortunate. She consistently harbors feelings for Owen, having been in love with him for many years, but he never truly reciprocates these emotions. Tosh also experiences a romantic relationship with the reanimated World War I soldier, Tommy, who comes to life once a year, but ultimately gives up his life to save her at the episode’s end.

In the season 2 finale, Tosh’s demise is deeply sorrowful and undeniably unjust. She gets injured by a treacherous pillar in “Fragments,” making her vulnerable when Jack’s brother, Gray, shoots her in “Exit Wounds.” Despite this, she remains connected to the team even after her death, as she aids them from beyond the grave. An essential device of hers, the time bubble, saves Gwen and Ianto from meeting their end at the hands of the Daleks in “The Stolen Earth,” had it not been for Tosh’s posthumous intervention.

3. Ianto Jones

Dead

Ianto Jones is a cherished figure, and the way he met his end in “Torchwood” remains a significant topic even years later, with a tribute to the character still standing on the promenade of Cardiff Bay. Initially, Ianto seems like just a tea boy, handling tasks such as cleaning up after others and running errands. However, this perception is soon proven wrong. The episode “Cyberwoman” reveals that Ianto actually worked at Torchwood One, rescued his partially transformed girlfriend, and hid her in the basement of Torchwood Three. Tragically, Lisa, who had become half-Cyberwoman, didn’t make it.

Over time, Ianto increasingly takes on more responsibilities. He develops his individuality, participates in missions with the team, and maintains Torchwood Three’s secrecy by manning the concealed entrance in the visitor center. Later, he even enters a relationship with Jack, though their romance remains unspoken of among the organization members. However, their romantic tale, which adds depth to the narrative, doesn’t last nearly as long as it ought to have.

Torchwood Character Season & Episode Of Death(s)
Suzie Costello Season 1, Episode 1: “Everything Changes” Season 1, Episode 8: “They Keep Killing Suzie”
Owen Harper Season 2, Episode 6: “Reset” Season 2, Episode 13: “Exit Wounds”
Toshiko Sato Season 2, Episode 13: “Exit Wounds”
Ianto Jones Season 3 (Miracle Day), Episode 4: “Day Four”

In the sci-fi series Torchwood: Children of Earth, the character Ianto Jones, who’s cherished by many, displays more openness about his sexuality and discusses his relationship with his sister. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, Ianto perishes when the 456 unleashes a lethal virus within their confines. As the building seals off, both Jack and Ianto are trapped. Despite Jack’s survival, there was no hope for Ianto. All that Jack could do was cling to his lover as they both meet their end, which is incredibly sad.

In the Torchwood audio story “The House of the Dead,” Ianto and Jack are able to bid a formal farewell, but it’s not quite like their goodbye on-screen. After Ianto’s demise, the series of Torchwood feels almost unrelated to its original form, making it understandable that Jack decides to depart from Earth. With the loss of Tosh, Owen, Suzie, and his grandson, it’s no wonder he leaves. Gareth David Lloyd, who played Ianto Jones, has expressed a desire to rejoin the Doctor Who universe; I truly hope this dream becomes a reality in some way.

2. Gwen Cooper

Abandoned By Jack

In the pilot of Torchwood, we meet Gwen Cooper, a curious and dedicated local police officer who might benefit from a touch more self-assurance. It’s later confirmed in season 4’s “Journey’s End” that she’s related to Gwyneth (played by Eve Myles, also seen in Doctor Who‘s first season episode, “The Unquiet Dead”). This connection was one of the intriguing Doctor Who theories that eventually turned out to be true. After witnessing Torchwood Three employing the Glove on a stormy night in “Everything Changes,” Gwen decides to follow their trail. Jack is drawn to her tenacity and takes her on board after Suzie’s demise.

In the TV series, Torchwood, Gwen undergoes a captivating transformation in her character. Initially, she’s not the most loyal partner to Rhys and their relationship isn’t as strong, but as time passes, she stands by him, they marry, and even have a child together. Gwen is bold and doesn’t shy away from expressing her thoughts or standing up for herself, quickly becoming a significant figure in Torchwood Three. During the absence of Jack between seasons 1 and 2 (as he’s with the Doctor and Martha battling the Saxon Master), Gwen competently manages Torchwood’s daily operations. After the incidents of Children of Earth, Jack departs from a pregnant Gwen on Earth with Rhys.

In Torchwood: Miracle Day, it’s not surprising that Gwen is troubled when Jack goes missing. Yet, with assistance from fresh faces like Rex and Esther (who don’t quite match up to Tosh and Owen), they manage to counteract the global immortality phenomenon.

The conclusion of “Miracle Day” leaves room for interpretation, however, the television series “Doctor Who,” specifically in “Revolution of the Daleks,” provides insight into what became of Torchwood, as Jack Harkness discloses he plans to reconnect with Gwen Cooper and reveals she has a son. It’s evident that following “Miracle Day”, Jack disappears once more, and it seems improbable we’ll discover if he eventually reunites with Gwen after his time in “Doctor Who.

1. Captain Jack Harkness

Disappeared From Earth

Even though Captain Jack Harkness won’t reappear in Doctor Who, it’s crucial for fans to understand his subsequent journey. Many viewers are acquainted with the ex-Time Agent and how he gains immortality, following which, after being left behind by the Ninth Doctor in “The Parting of the Ways,” Jack returns to Earth, hoping to reunite with the Time Lord. However, Jack spends many years engaging in various activities, but what stands out is his assumption of control over Torchwood Three. Torchwood, distinct from Doctor Who, provides a unique insight into Jack’s life and experiences that the former series cannot.

In the series Torchwood, we delve deeper into Jack’s background, particularly his upbringing on the Boeshane Peninsula, his bond with Captain John Hart, and his long-lost sibling Gray. Furthermore, Jack’s romantic storyline with Ianto Jones is a significant aspect of his character development in Torchwood. It’s tragic that their romance doesn’t culminate in a happy ending, as Ianto’s untimely death at a relatively young age leaves Jack heartbroken. Despite the looming inevitability of their separation due to Jack’s immortality, his romantic pursuits and charisma remain unchanged throughout Torchwood.

In the final episode of Miracle Day within Torchwood, Jack’s last appearance occurs at Esther’s funeral. During this time, both Jack and Gwen find out Rex has become immortal; however, further references to his character in the Whoniverse have yet to surface on-screen, leaving his fate uncertain. Later, Jack makes brief appearances during the Thirteenth Doctor’s reign, but it remains unclear how he parts ways with Gwen once more after a mention of her at the end of the 2014 New Year special of Doctor Who. What can be confirmed is that Torchwood Three no longer exists.
