10 Mortal Kombat Characters Missing from the Movie Franchise

In the upcoming movie “Mortal Kombat 2“, there are many characters to look forward to, yet some classic video game personas have yet to make an appearance in this revamped series. The live-action adaptation of the legendary fighting game, “Mortal Kombat”, was reborn 24 years after its initial release in 1995 with a new film in 2021. Despite having mixed reviews, fans are excited for the sequel, “Mortal Kombat 2”. The sequel will not only star Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, one of the most famous characters, but it will also recreate the Mortal Kombat tournament itself.

In essence, this indicates that the warriors from Earthrealm will engage in battles against numerous characters hailing from Outworld and Netherrealm in the upcoming sequel. Familiar faces such as Cole Young, Liu Kang, Raiden, and Sonya Blade are set to reappear, while newcomers like Baraka, Quan Chi, Queen Sindel, and the formidable Shao Kahn, ruler of Outworld, will make their debut. It’s worth mentioning that certain characters on this roster might pop up unexpectedly in Mortal Kombat 2, but as of now, none have been officially confirmed for the sequel. So here are ten characters I’d love to see featured in future Mortal Kombat films:

10. Ermac Is An Outworld Warrior Who Uses Telekinesis

First Game Appearance: Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (1995)

Ermac is a Mortal Kombat character who lacks emotions but possesses formidable telekinetic powers in battle. Given that he fights for the improvement of Outworld, it seems fitting to have him appear in Mortal Kombat 2 or future movies. This character, essentially a fusion of souls lost during Outworld’s wars, is unique in that he often uses plural pronouns like “we” and “us.” In many video games, Ermac is under the command of Shao Kahn and his Shadow Priests, making him a challenging adversary for warriors from Earthrealm.

9. Chameleon Is The Same Species As Reptile

First Game Appearance: Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (1995)

Just like Ermac, Chameleon is frequently considered one of Shao Kahn’s most formidable warriors, making it exciting to imagine either him or his female counterpart, Khameleon, appearing in a future Mortal Kombat movie. Much like Ermac, Chameleon has the ability to blend into his surroundings during combat, a skill that often confuses and disorients his opponents. Hailing from the Saurian race, reptilian humanoids who descended from dinosaurs, Chameleon shares this lineage with Reptile, another character who featured in the initial Mortal Kombat movie. Given this connection, it seems logical that either Chameleon or Khameleon could make an appearance in the film series as well.

8. Kabal Is A Former Member Of The Black Dragon Clan

First Game Appearance: Mortal Kombat 3 (1995)

In the world of Mortal Kombat, Kabal is a villain who endured an assault from one of Shao Kahn’s elimination teams, resulting in him needing to don a mask and a respiratory device for survival. This equipment was supplied by Kano, a fellow he knew as a former member of the Black Dragon clan. Since Kano heads the Black Dragon clan and played a significant role in the 2021 film, it would be thrilling to witness Kabal make an appearance in future Mortal Kombat movies, perhaps even squaring off against his old comrade.

7. Cyrax Is Turned Into A Robot In The Mortal Kombat Franchise

First Game Appearance: Mortal Kombat 3 (1995)

In the Mortal Kombat series, Cyrax stands out as one of the most intriguing characters due to his backstory. Originally, he was a human who was transformed into a robot through the Cyber Initiative, a project developed by the Lin Kuei clan with the aim of transforming all their assassins into emotionless, cybernetic fighters. The Cyber Initiative is a topic that sparks much debate, and if a Mortal Kombat movie were to explore his past, it could offer a heart-wrenching narrative by showing Cyrax as a human before his robotic transformation.

6. Sektor Embraces The Cyber Initiative

First Game Appearance: Mortal Kombat 3 (1995)

In the Mortal Kombat video games, Cyrax strives to reconnect with his human feelings, contrasting Sektor who wholeheartedly uses his robotic abilities and often acts as a villain. Sektor, who was once the Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei and a Cyber Lin Kuei, can pose a significant threat not only to Cyrax but also to other characters in Mortal Kombat movies. Unlike characters like Cyrax and Sub-Zero, Sektor never doubts the Cyber Initiative and fully identifies with being cybernetic, making it fitting to include him if Cyrax is introduced to the storyline.

5. Cassie Cage Is A Newer Protagonist In The Franchise

First Game Appearance: Mortal Kombat X (2015)

Cassie Cage, who was born to Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, debuted as one of the main characters in 2015’s “Mortal Kombat X”. Given that Johnny Cage made his appearance in “Mortal Kombat 2”, it’s plausible that he might have developed a relationship with Sonya Blade. However, since the movie version of Johnny Cage is older, it could be that he already has a daughter like Cassie. Despite being relatively new to the franchise, fans would love to see Cassie Cage featured in future “Mortal Kombat” films.

4. Nightwolf Is A Somewhat Controversial (But Great) Mortal Kombat Character

First Game Appearance: Mortal Kombat 3 (1995)

In the Mortal Kombat series of games, Nightwolf hails from the Matoka Tribe, a Native American group that dwells within the realm known as Earthrealm. The representation of Nightwolf in certain Mortal Kombat games has drawn criticism for perpetuating Native American stereotypes. Yet, if his origins and characteristics are treated with sensitivity, it would be fascinating to see him featured in an upcoming Mortal Kombat film, given that he is a potent ally to Earthrealm’s fighters.

3. Kintaro Is Arguably Stronger Than Goro In The Mortal Kombat Games

First Game Appearance: Mortal Kombat II (1993)

In the initial installment of Mortal Kombat, Liu Kang vanquished Goro. Then, in the subsequent game, Kintaro stepped into the role previously held by the four-armed champion of Outworld. As Goro was defeated in the first Mortal Kombat film, it’s fitting that Kintaro might appear as one of Shao Kahn’s warriors in the sequel or a future movie. Given that Kintaro shares four arms and a tiger-like appearance with Goro, he would undoubtedly make an imposing adversary in a future Mortal Kombat film.

2. Sheeva Is The Same Species As Goro & Kintaro

First Game Appearance: Mortal Kombat 3 (1995)

Discussing characters with four arms, it’d be awesome if Sheeva made an appearance in Mortal Kombat 2 or a future film. Similar to Goro and Kintaro, Sheeva belongs to the Shokan race – a mix of human and dragon creatures in the Mortal Kombat universe. In the games, she functions as Queen Sindel’s personal guard. As Queen Sindel is set to appear in Mortal Kombat 2 alongside the powerful ruler of Outworld, it seems fitting for Sheeva to join her in the sequel or at least in an upcoming movie.

1. Shinnok Could Emerge As The Franchise’s Main Villain

First Game Appearance: Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero (1997)

In the world of Mortal Kombat, Shinnok, who is the Death Elder God and ruler of the Netherrealm, is one of the primary antagonists alongside Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn. Given that he’s a crucial character in the franchise, it’s logical to expect his appearance in an upcoming Mortal Kombat movie. In the games, you may recall Quan Chi as an ally of Shinnok, who is set to debut in Mortal Kombat 2. After Shao Kahn’s defeat, it seems fitting that Shinnok might take over as the main villain in either the third or fourth installment of the Mortal Kombat movie series.

Apart from Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn, Shinnok stands out as one of the most renowned antagonists in the Mortal Kombat universe. He is generally considered more potent than both Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn, making his potential inclusion in the series intriguing. While it’s doubtful that we’ll see Shinnok in Mortal Kombat 2, his possible appearance in a future film could elevate the franchise’s intensity even further.
