Critics HATED It, Now Everyone’s Streaming This Russell Crowe Movie!

While Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott still bask in the acclaim of their Academy Award-winning blockbuster after a quarter century, their latest venture into a significant historical film has left a mark on their collective histories. Initially met with harsh criticism upon its release in 2010, Crowe and Scott’s movie, , is gaining new momentum on streaming platforms due to its availability online.

According to Max’s current top 10 movie list, Robin Hood ranks ninth. The movie has been garnering positive responses on HBO’s streaming platform, maintaining a place in the top 10 for two consecutive weeks and earning high positions in various countries. Additionally, it has been gaining traction on Amazon Prime Video as well.

In this retelling, Robin Hood embarks on his adventure towards Nottingham following the demise of King Richard the Lionheart (Danny Huston). Upon arrival in Nottingham, he crosses paths with Marion Loxley (Cate Blanchett), a feisty widow who harbors doubts about Robin’s intentions. In his new town, where the villagers are burdened by excessive taxes and the tyranny of a cruel sheriff, Robin gathers a band of warriors to combat corruption within Nottingham. As he strives to win Marion’s affection, Robin’s efforts to aid the oppressed escalate into a massive struggle to protect England itself.

Regardless of Scott as director and an impressive ensemble featuring the late William Hurt, Oscar Isaac, Léa Seydoux, and Matthew Macfadyen, the film Robin Hood fell short with both critics and audiences. The Universal Pictures production currently holds a “rotten” 43% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and failed to recoup its costs commercially, grossing $321.7 million against an estimated budget of up to $237 million.

In his career, Russell Crowe played his final leading role in a big-budget movie with Robin Hood, having starred in smaller productions like The Pope’s Exorcist and Noah, as well as supporting roles in movies such as Man of Steel, Thor: Love and Thunder, and others. Following this, Crowe took on the part of Nazi politician and military leader Hermann Göring in Nuremberg, alongside Rami Malek from Bohemian Rhapsody. Meanwhile, Ridley Scott’s latest project was the highly anticipated sequel to Gladiator, titled Gladiator II. This film focused on Paul Mescal’s character Lucius Verus, Maximus’ son, and received a 70% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, almost equaling the original’s $460.5 million global revenue after Maximus was killed off towards the end of the first movie.

More Robin Hood Is On the Way

Despite Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe’s portrayal of Robin Hood falling short, numerous attempts to accurately depict the hero are underway. A new Robin Hood TV series is currently being developed at MGM+, having commenced production in March this year. Notably, Russel Crowe’s Gladiator co-star will play a part in this series as well. On the other hand, celebrated actor Hugh Jackman is spearheading Michael Sarnoski’s upcoming project, titled “Pursuit,” where he assumes the lead role.
