The 1 Beetlejuice Ending Detail About Lydia That Still Makes Zero Sense After the Sequel

The long-awaited sequel to “Beetlejuice,” which came out 36 years after the original film, provided many answers to questions left unresolved at the end of the first movie. For example, details about Betelgeuse’s backstory and his eventual demise were revealed in the sequel. However, some aspects from the initial “Beetlejuice” movie remain unexplained in the follow-up, such as a puzzling detail related to Lydia Deetz (played by Winona Ryder) in the final scene of that film.

In the original “Beetlejuice” film, the story concludes with Lydia dancing and mimicking to Harry Belafonte’s popular calypso song “Jump in the Line”. This scene takes place at the Maitland house, where a row of ghostly football players mysteriously appear on the staircase. I firmly believe that Tim Burton crafted Beetlejuice to be a comedic delight, using the script’s playful manipulation of internal logic as a key ingredient for humor. However, what makes this film truly enchanting is its establishment of some basic guidelines for its supernatural premise. These rules are primarily outlined in the “Handbook of the Recently Deceased”, a manual that not only guides characters Adam and Barbara Maitland through their ghostly existence but also serves to enlighten us about the world within the movie.

However, the unexpected emergence of football players at the end of Beetlejuice contradicts one of the book’s fundamental rules, adding an intriguing twist to the story.

In the movie, almost every spirit, aside from caseworker Juno and Betelgeuse himself, needs to pass through a door as a means to travel between the afterlife and our world. This rule is clearly demonstrated when the recently deceased Maitlands have to draw a door on a wall to enter the afterlife. Even Betelgeuse can only step into our world if he’s called upon, by someone saying his name three times in rapid succession.

In contrast, as ghost football players act as Lydia’s backup dancers during the film’s final scene, they suddenly materialize without passing through a door or being called upon from the living world. This unexpected appearance goes against the rules of the afterlife established earlier in Beetlejuice, which complicates the movie’s storyline and remains unexplained throughout Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

The Football Players In Beetlejuice’s Ending Strangely Have A Much More Ghostly Appearance Than The Other Dead Characters

They’re See-Through, Whereas Other Ghosts In Beetlejuice Have Solid, Opaque Bodies

Furthermore, it’s worth noting that the football players at the end of Beetlejuice seem distinct from the other ghosts in the film. In contrast to their solid and human-like appearances in all previous scenes, they appear semi-transparent when they dance with Lydia during “Jump in the Line”. This is unlike the consistent solid appearance of ghosts seen elsewhere in Beetlejuice, which resembles living human beings more closely. Instead, their final appearance is reminiscent of how ghosts look in other movies.

In Beetlejuice, even though Barbara and Adam Maitland are subjected to an exorcism by Otho, the Deetz’ interior designer, they don’t become see-through. Instead, their skin wrinkles and bones become visible, yet they maintain a solid appearance similar to living beings. The ghost football players, though transparent, provide a delightful touch of absurdity in the climactic scenes of the movie. However, this brief comic relief shouldn’t overshadow the overall horror narrative consistency of Beetlejuice, as it might seem out of place within the film’s meticulously constructed spooky atmosphere.
