In the horror series, the fourth major instalment titled “The Conjuring: Last Rites” has debuted its chilling initial trailer.
In this movie, serving as the ninth installment in the series, Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Wilson (Vera Farmiga), having previously retired, are drawn back into action for what appears to be their final assignment. They team up with their daughter Judy (Mia Tomlinson) and her boyfriend Tony (Ben Hardy) to explore a haunted dwelling.
Drawing inspiration from the actual events known as the Smurl haunting, the chilling introduction showcases brief appearances of characters like The Nun and Annabelle, preceding the Warrens’ journey to a haunted house in Pennsylvania to solve its eerie secrets.

Under the leadership of director Michael Chaves, who previously helmed 2021’s “The Devil Made Me Do It”, the upcoming film titled “Last Rites” features Rebecca Calder and Elliot Cowan in lead roles. These characters seek the assistance of the Warrens to investigate a haunted house.
During a recent chat, producers Peter Safran and Wilson shared their reasons for basing the movie on the Smurl haunting. According to Safran, the event’s cultural impact in America was a key consideration.
The Smurl case was frequently discussed… It’s one of the cases that comes up easily when you search online,” said the producer (via Entertainment Weekly). This subject proved perfect for our needs as it allowed us to capitalize on something viewers could look up after watching the movie.
Wow, I couldn’t believe it when I found out they had so many offspring! And guess what? They were actually this old, and their grandparents were even there! It’s always been impactful for us, you know,” he went on to say, with Wilson mentioning that they aimed to make the narrative more dramatic.
The actor mentioned, “We’ve been familiar with this topic for quite some time,” implying that writers are exploring its impact on the family dynamics and their personal lives. This is an opportunity to bring the drama to life on stage. It’s important to clarify that we’re not producing a documentary.
The Conjuring: Last Rites is released in cinemas on 5 September.
