Thunderbolts* Finally Fixed John Walker—Will Marvel Keep His Bold Edge in Avengers: Doomsday?

Spoilers for Marvel’s Thunderbolts* lie ahead, so be warned, Marvel Cinematic Universe fans.

Following several months of building excitement, the movie “Thunderbolts” was officially announced in this month’s 2025 film lineup, and it has been widely praised as a comeback for the MCU. Here’s why: Directed by Jake Schreier, this superhero blockbuster delivers a thrilling narrative, stunning visuals, profound themes, and an array of captivating characters. Among these characters, one stands out particularly in terms of development – John Walker, also known as U.S. Agent. In fact, the movie effectively addresses a significant concern I had about John from the beginning.

How Did Thunderbolts* Fix John Walker For Me?

2021’s “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” introduced the character John Walker, skillfully portrayed by Wyatt Russell. This limited series is available for streaming with a Disney+ subscription. In this show, John Walker takes on the role of Captain America after Sam Wilson, who received Steve Rogers’ shield, declined it. Throughout the story, Walker serves as a sort of contrast to both Sam and Bucky Barnes, his potential future teammate.

I was thrilled when Walker joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and despite the conclusion of the previous series, I remained eager for John’s potential reappearance in a film like Thunderbolts. Nevertheless, I had reservations about his portrayal at times, as it seemed inconsistent. On one hand, he was supposed to be upright and virtuous, subtly playing the role of a villain. However, there were moments that suggested the writers intended him to be more of an antihero capable of questionable actions, such as when he used Captain America’s shield to commit murder.

I really enjoy the consistency in Walker’s recent appearance. Unlike before, Jake Schreier and writers Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo focus less on making John likable and more on showcasing his flawed traits. This time, John comes across as more arrogant, even belittling characters like Yelena Belova and Ava Starr. He’s also quite rude to the timid Bob, who calls him an “asshole.” Additionally, John, together with Ava, seizes Taskmaster’s weapons following her demise at his hands.

Doomsday”.

John Walker Is Headed For An Avengers Movie

At the conclusion of “Thunderbolts”, Walker’s group finds themselves in a puzzling predicament as they are designated as the New Avengers. The post-credits scene directed by Anthony and Joe Russo later reveals that the team encounters a trademark lawsuit from Sam Wilson, whose bond with Bucky Barnes might be under tension due to this legal dispute. John is undoubtedly part of the team during the post-credits sequence, which jumps ahead 14 months following the movie’s primary events, and he appears to have retained his original personality throughout.

One aspect that makes the Avengers movies so enjoyable is the excitement of watching numerous Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) heroes unite for a grand cinematic experience. This gathering allows viewers to witness unique personalities collide and harmonize in delightful ways. The anticipation of the bumbling but well-intentioned Walker interacting with characters like the Fantastic Four or the returning X-Men is thrilling. It’s hard not to smile at the thought of him encountering no-nonsense individuals such as Ben Grimm (The Thing) or Professor X.

As I eagerly anticipate the next chapter for Walker in “Avengers: Doomsday” and potentially its sequel, “Secret Wars,” I can’t help but express my excitement. The captivating portrayal of him in “Thunderbolts” has left me yearning for more, and I truly hope that the filmmakers will continue to elevate his character. It would be an added delight if they could somehow arrange a suitable shield for him as well.

Currently, Thunderbolts is running in movie theaters. On the other hand, Avengers: Doomsday is being filmed and scheduled for release on May 1, 2026. In the interim, take a look at other anticipated Marvel films.
