Simon Cowell Nearly Paralyzed: Surgeon Unsure He’d Ever Walk Again After E-Bike Horror Crash
Simon Cowell‘s doctor expressed concern that he might never be able to walk after his severe e-bike accident, according to a recent disclosure by Cowell.
Last year, I had a close call that left me shaken and nursing some serious injuries – I was the unlucky soul who took a tumble while testing out an electric bike at my Malibu, California residence. Being 65, it was no minor spill; I fractured my spine!
After the severe accident, he underwent a series of comprehensive surgeries, one of which involved the insertion of a metal rod into his spine for support. Since then, he has significantly changed his way of life.
Currently, Simon is shedding light on the catastrophic consequences of the accident, sharing that his surgeon remains uncertain about whether he can successfully mend his injured spine given its seriousness.
During an interview with Elizabeth Day on the How To Fail podcast, Simon shared that he came extremely close to losing his life in the accident, and his doctor had cautioned him that there was a possibility he may never be able to walk again.
He revealed: “He displayed the X-ray for me and explained, ‘Simon, I must be honest with you, I’m not certain if I can repair this situation. If that’s the case, your mobility will likely be affected, and secondly, the operation might extend up to 11 hours.’

They pointed out the obvious risk – that things might not go as planned – and in that instant, I found myself preoccupied with thoughts of my loved ones and all they mean to me. It was then that I truly understood how vital it is to prioritize one’s health and avoid reckless actions.
Previously on “X Factor,” the judge acknowledged that a terrifying incident served as a significant reminder of the dangers associated with his high-risk lifestyle, prompting him to reevaluate and minimize such risks moving forward.
‘It was a wake-up moment, which is I’m crazy,’ he explained.
As a lifestyle expert, I found myself in an unexpected situation that made me reevaluate my fitness level. Initially, I believed myself to be quite fit, but a series of events led me to undergo physical therapy. The exercises, particularly the fast-paced walking routines, left me incapacitated and struggling to move freely. It was then that I realized I had been in a rather unhealthy state, both physically and mentally. This experience served as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining overall wellness.
Upon contemplating the incident with his electric bike, Simon disclosed that he was propelled off the vehicle because it performed an enormous wheelie as a result of the potent throttle. He admitted that at that moment, he recognized he had fractured his spine.
He excitedly brought it over from England, eager to take it for a spin. As soon as we were both in the driveway, his son was present. He revved up the engine, and the vehicle did an enormous wheelie, propelling him around 7-8 feet into the air, he shared.
Upon landing, I found myself flat on my back, and immediately, a thought crossed my mind, “Oh no, I believe I’ve fractured my spine.” The sensation I felt confirmed my suspicion.
The first action I took was to check if I could move my hands, yes I could, then I checked my feet, yes I could, Alright, it seems I’m not in a terrible state.

Despite the initial concern that the accident might leave him paralyzed, Simon has fully recuperated and claims he’s even more robust than he was prior to the collision.
Since then, he’s lost about seven pounds and quit smoking, a habit that once had him smoking around 80 cigarettes daily.
2023 saw him share with The Sun that he had nearly faced a lifetime bound to a wheelchair, an experience that profoundly shifts one’s perspective on life. Yet, it carries a positive impact.
‘It hurt – trust me – when it happened, but good things happened off the back of it.’
Simon came to understand that his health was more valuable than anything else, which prompted him to drastically change his lifestyle in search of a healthier work-life balance.
Due to the accident, he shifted his attention towards his family life with partner Lauren Silverman and their 11-year-old son, Eric. Additionally, he reduced his workload during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to 2017, Simon was smoking as many as 80 cigarettes a day. However, following an accident where he fell downstairs at his London residence, he significantly reduced his smoking habit and now only smokes two cigarettes daily.
He used to work through the entire night, but he now refuses to work past 6pm or on his days off.
