Netflix has announced Taika Waititi’s reimagining of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The streaming service just announced a new animated project from the creator, and gave a timeframe for when it will be released. This follows a recent surge in projects featuring Willy Wonka, including the 2017 Broadway musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the well-received Wonka movie, which explores his backstory.
Netflix has revealed that Taika Waititi will star in their upcoming animated film, a new take on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, titled Willy Wonka. Waititi will play Willy Wonka, and Kit Connor will play Charlie Paley. The film is directed by Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan, who are reimagining the classic story of Charlie and Willy Wonka.
Okay, so the movie is set in London now, years after we first met Willy Wonka. Apparently, Wonka ended up in jail for what happened with Violet turning into a blueberry! After he gets out, he goes back to his factory, but here’s the crazy part: Charlie and his friends have actually taken over the place! They’re trying to pull off a heist, and it’s all to help their families, which I think is a really cool twist.
Check out the full synopsis below:
Years after the famous Golden Ticket contest, Willy Wonka (played by Taika Waititi) was imprisoned for a peculiar crime: turning a child into a blueberry. Now released, Wonka is back at his factory hoping to bring joy to a gloomy world. However, a group of teenagers – led by Charlie Paley (Connor) – are determined to stop him. Facing homelessness, these kids plan to sneak into the factory and steal a valuable Wonka Bar to save their homes. But like others before them, they’ll soon discover that Wonka’s factory holds more surprises – and challenges – than they bargained for.
Taika Waititi not only stars in the film, but he’s also an executive producer. The animation comes from Sony Pictures Imageworks, the studio behind hits like KPop Demon Hunters and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. They’ve also shared a first-look image, giving fans a sneak peek at what the movie will be like.
Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory will be released on Netflix in 2027.
As a movie reviewer, I’ve been following the news about Netflix’s acquisition of Roald Dahl’s storybook empire back in 2021, and it’s exciting to see them finally bringing these tales to life on screen. The folks at Netflix, specifically Stern and Bogan, have shared that their goal is to honor the original spirit and wonder of Willy Wonka – both in the storytelling and the way these stories are visually presented. They really want to capture that same magic we all remember.
Growing up with the wonderfully strange world of Willy Wonka, we’re thrilled to continue his story for grown-up audiences. And it’s amazing to be able to do it with animation, creating a Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory that’s even more delightfully chaotic than you can imagine. If we don’t deliver, feel free to give us a harsh critique!
Stars Connor and Waititi have both shared their enthusiasm for Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory. Connor was attracted to the unique vision of Stern and Bogan for the story, as well as its contemporary London setting. Waititi, meanwhile, is thrilled to contribute to the iconic Willy Wonka story by voicing a character in the new project.
I’m thrilled to be joining the cast of Wonka! I was immediately drawn in by the film’s concept art and the directors’ vision. They’re capturing the magic of the original story while also bringing something completely new and exciting to it. It’s a really fun take on London, and I think audiences worldwide are going to love this new adventure – it’s going to be a real treat!
Taika Waititi shared his excitement about the new animated Willy Wonka project, praising the directors, Jared and Elaine, for their creative vision while honoring the original story. He’s delighted to be voicing Wonka, a character he deeply cherishes, and finds it incredibly fun to portray the iconic, quirky, and sometimes playful candy maker.
As a huge film fan, I’m really excited about the new Wonka movie! Hannah Minghella, who heads up animation and family films at Netflix, has said they’re aiming to share Willy Wonka’s story with a whole new generation of kids. But, and this is key, they also want to make sure they stay true to what made Roald Dahl’s original story so magical.
Jared and Elaine have created a wonderfully imaginative film that captures the heart of Roald Dahl’s classic story while also offering a fresh, new adventure for audiences of all ages. We’re excited for everyone to discover the film’s magic and fun when it’s released next year.
Netflix is creating an animated movie of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, following their recent announcement of the reality show The Golden Ticket, which is based on Roald Dahl’s book. This will be the first animated film based solely on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and it’s the first major project for the franchise since Netflix acquired the rights.
Taika Waititi’s take on Willy Wonka seems set to share the magic of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with a new generation, while still appealing to fans of the original story. The animated film promises the same heartwarming spirit as Roald Dahl’s book, but will also be a fresh, unique production for Netflix.
