Andor’s Latest Death Leads to Heartbreaking Moment for Dedra

Warning: SPOILERS for this week’s Andor episodes are ahead!

Each passing week adds another set of three episodes from the second season of Andor to the 2025 TV lineup. We’ve now reached three-quarters of the way through this final journey for Diego Luna’s title character, and this week saw the departure of another significant character following Varada Sethu’s Cinta Kaz’s demise last week. The death scene was skillfully executed, leading to my favorite emotionally impactful moment that the Disney+ exclusive Star Wars show has provided thus far this season.

Syril Karn Was Killed On Ghorman

When Denise Gough’s character, Dedra Meero, took over the Empire’s mission on Ghorman, Kyle Soller’s character, Syril Karn, who is her boyfriend, accompanied her. Even though he remained loyal to the Empire, we saw in the recent episodes of Andor that Syril feigned interest in the Ghorman Front, solely to be drawn into the resistance and share information about their operations with Dedra. However, since his rank within the Imperial hierarchy was not as high, he wasn’t privy to the true reason behind the Empire’s presence on Ghorman.

A year passed, and Syril ultimately discovered the reality: the Empire required Kalkite, a mineral found in the deep layers of the planet, to shield the Death Star’s reactor lenses. Mining this mineral could potentially make the planet uninhabitable for hundreds of thousands, but the Imperial leaders showed no concern. Instead, they spread propaganda against the Ghorman people, fostering a radical insurgency without directly involving themselves. Once the insurgency was established, the Empire planned to quell it and seize total control of the planet, disregarding the lives of the Ghorman citizens in order to mine as much Kalkite as desired.

In the story “Who Are You?”, the Ghorman Massacre, a well-known event in Star Wars history, occurred. Before the stormtroopers and Imperial enforcer droids (including K-2SO, later played by Alan Tudyk), began killing members of the Ghorman Front and innocent civilians, Syril was outraged to discover he had been involved in an act he strongly opposed. He went as far as to physically attack Dedra to make her admit his suspicions, and he was enraged that she had kept this from him.

In the end, Syril found himself on the ground amidst the chaos of many lives being lost, and it was at this moment that he noticed Cassian Andor, the individual he’d been determined to capture throughout Season 1. Seizing his opportunity, Syril immediately attacked Cassian, leading to a fierce fight. Their altercation concluded with Syril pointing his gun at his long-desired prey. However, when Cassian failed to recognize Syril, this moment of confusion caused Kyle Stoller’s character to hesitate and lower his blaster. Unfortunately, before he could react further, Carro Rylanz, a prominent figure in Palmo City and leader of the Ghorman Front, shot Syril.

Dedra’s Reaction To Syril’s Death Was Heartbreaking

I believe it’s worth noting that Andor handled Syril Karn’s death exceptionally well. In his last moments, it became clear to him that his fixation on Cassian Andor was futile because Cassian didn’t recognize him, and he was dealing with Dedra Meero breaking his trust. Additionally, it was appropriate for Carro Rylanz to be the one who ended Syril’s life, given their prior confrontation over Syril’s betrayal of the Ghorman Front and the Empire’s ruthless actions against Carro’s own people.

Andor Season 2 Revealed How Saw Gerrera’s Lungs Were Damaged, And Now I Feel For The Guy Even More

As a devoted film enthusiast penning this review, let me shed light on an intriguing creative decision made in the second season of Andor – the recasting of a beloved Star Wars character. While the new actor skillfully embodies the role, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia for the original performer. Here’s the scoop behind this change straight from the director’s chair:

In an exclusive interview, the showrunner candidly shared that the decision to recast was primarily driven by the character’s evolution and growth throughout the series. As Andor unfolds its gripping storyline, our favorite character undergoes a significant transformation, necessitating a fresh perspective to convincingly portray this metamorphosis.

Though I appreciate the thoughtful approach to character development, I can’t help but miss the magic that the original actor brought to the role. Their performance left an indelible mark on my Star Wars fandom journey, and it’s bittersweet to witness a new interpreter stepping into those iconic boots.

Regardless, I’m eagerly anticipating how this change will impact the narrative and where this captivating saga takes us next. Until then, may the Force be with you, fellow fans!

What lingers in my mind after viewing “Who Are You?” is Dedra’s emotional collapse following Syril’s offscreen death. Although Dedra is an intriguing character, I hadn’t felt empathy for her until this moment. While I comprehend her ambition to advance within the Imperial hierarchy, it doesn’t soften the fact that she has shown a cold and merciless side on multiple instances, such as when she instructed Doctor Gorst to torment Bix Caleen.

Despite the harsh exterior she displayed following the Ghorman Massacre, once alone and free from scrutiny, Dedra unexpectedly let her guard down and wept over Syril’s demise. Although she appeared indifferent towards him during Andor Season 1, she came to recognize a kindred soul in him after he rescued her on Ferrix. Their relationship might have seemed strange and awkward at times, but it was undeniable that Dedra had genuine feelings for Syril.

Initially, I wasn’t entirely certain that Dedra genuinely cared about Syril, or if she was merely manipulating him for the benefit of her superiors. However, now that he’s gone, it’s undeniable that her grief is real. With just three episodes left in Season 2 of Andor, I find myself uncertain whether this show will provide a content ending for Dedra.
