Spider-Man Secretly Ruined a Thunderbolts* Plot?! You Won’t Believe How!
In one of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films, the plotline posed a challenge when it came to introducing a new character in Thunderbolts. Lewis Pullman steps into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time as Bob (also known as Sentry/the Void), an unconventional yet incredibly powerful figure. Readers versed in his comic book history are aware that Sentry has been present longer than he himself realizes, but his origin tale needed to be reworked for his introduction into the MCU.
In a conversation with Marvel, director Jake Schreifier explained that the plot of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” made it difficult to accurately portray Sentry’s origins in “Thunderbolts.” In the comics, Sentry is a hero who intentionally erased himself from people’s memories to stop his evil alter ego, the Void. A similar plot point was used in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” when Peter Parker asks Doctor Strange to cast a spell that makes him forgettable to everyone on Earth. Since this storyline has recently been employed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Schreier stated that they couldn’t reuse it for Sentry’s debut in “Thunderbolts.
Clearly, we weren’t able to narrate the same tale due to ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, all thanks to Jon [Watts].
In an alternate portrayal, Thunderbolts presents Bob as a former Project Sentry test subject whose memory was selectively erased by O.X.E., and unlike in the original comics, he doesn’t have a history of relationships with other Marvel characters, as these connections were formed after his self-induced amnesia.
Schreier emphasized the elements of Sentry that could be made vivid, such as portraying him as a “symbol for mental well-being” and ensuring he had both “benevolent and malevolent” traits.
It’s fascinating to learn that the character Sentry, created by Paul Jenkins, serves as a parable for mental health, with an equal balance of good and evil at play. However, when I delve into the comics, there is a sense of arrogance or overconfidence in Sentry that seems to worry those around him. This aspect of the character really struck a chord with me.
In Thunderbolts, Pullman skillfully portrays the various facets of his character, shifting between the human Bob, the superhuman Sentry, and the malevolent entity known as the Void. Pullman emphasized that he aimed to avoid making Sentry/Bob/the Void seem like separate entities, instead wanting to express that “they represent different aspects and pieces of a single individual.
As a passionate cinephile, I aimed to ensure the narrative wasn’t fragmented into separate compartments. Instead, it was crucial to maintain the consistency that reflected a single character’s evolution. There was no abrupt shifting or leaping to different personas, like jumping from lily pad to lily pad. Rather, all these traits and aspects belonged to one integrated individual.
In addition to Pullman, the movie Thunderbolts features Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, Wyatt Russell, who return to their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as an unconventional group of heroes, united by Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. The film Thunderbolts hit theaters on May 2 and received favorable critic reviews.
Will Sentry’s Comic Backstory Be Incorporated Into Avengers: Doomsday?
Fans won’t have seen the last of Mark Ruffalo as the Sentry character, as he has been confirmed for a role in Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster crossover film, Avengers: Doomsday. Although Spider-Man: No Way Home seemed to prevent Sentry from forming alliances with other Marvel superheroes due to his amnesia, it remains intriguing to see if Avengers: Doomsday will develop any of these potential relationships.
In the comics, Sentry worked alongside a variety of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) characters, particularly Doctor Strange and Spider-Man. Prior to erasing their memories of him, Sentry had a deep bond with Mister Fantastic and even made friends with the Hulk. In the MCU, Sentry has formed friendships primarily with his Thunderbolts colleagues, specifically Yelena (played by Florence Pugh). However, the movie’s end-credits scene suggests that Bob could be among the first to meet the Fantastic Four, potentially reigniting his comic book connection with Reed Richards, portrayed by Pedro Pascal, on screen.
Although the Thunderbolts deviated from Sentry’s comic book beginnings, the film concluded with the character joining the New Avengers, a situation reminiscent of his original storyline. In the upcoming movie, “Avengers: Doomsday,” it is expected that Sentry will play a significant role, being one of the most powerful among them, thereby creating numerous intriguing chances for him to engage with other Marvel Cinematic Universe characters.
