Hawkeye Season 2 SHOCK: Disney’s Secret Plan REVEALED?!
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seems like we haven’t heard much about Hawkeye for quite some time now, except for Hailee Steinfeld appearing as Kate Bishop at the end of The Marvels. Both she and her mentor Clint Barton have been absent from the limelight since their Disney+ series Hawkeye, which was released in late 2021. Recently, Jeremy Renner disclosed that he declined the opportunity to work on a second season of Hawkeye due to contract issues; however, fresh information suggests there may be another reason behind the absence of those additional episodes.
As a film enthusiast, I must share my thoughts on the matter of Jeremy Renner’s decision not to return for Hawkeye Season 2. Contrary to some reports suggesting that he declined due to being offered only half the compensation as in Season 1, it appears Disney and Marvel may have intentionally offered a lower salary to prevent the series from moving forward at all. This strategy, if true, is rather intriguing, as it suggests a calculated decision to maintain the integrity of the character or possibly manage budgetary constraints for future projects. Nonetheless, it’s always unfortunate when talented actors are unable to reprise their roles due to contractual disagreements.
Previously, one source asserted that Disney and Marvel chose not to renew “Hawkeye” because they expected Jeremey Renner to decline the offer. This supposedly provided them with a convenient excuse not to produce a second season of the show. Another source corroborated this theory, suggesting that the lowballing and blaming Renner for the cancellation were strategic moves. They also hinted that “Hawkeye” had moderate viewership, so budget cuts would have been necessary for Season 2 anyway.

It’s accurate to say that Hawkeye‘s debut didn’t quite reach record-breaking viewership levels. According to Samba TV, as reported by Deadline, the initial episode was watched by approximately 1.5 million households within its first five days of release. This is a decrease of around 40% compared to the viewership of Loki‘s Season 1 premiere in June 2021 during the same timeframe. However, the finale managed to improve significantly, garnering 938 million minutes of viewing time over the Christmas week it premiered, surpassing the 853 million minutes clocked by the first two episodes (as reported by THR).

If InSneider and Puck’s reports are correct, it appears that Hawkeye didn’t achieve the required success for Marvel and Disney to greenlight Season 2. While it’s understandable, laying the blame on Jeremy Renner for the series’ cancellation seems rather excessive and unnecessary. It seems questionable whether these companies truly needed to attribute the show’s discontinuation to this public explanation. Despite my appreciation for Hawkeye as one of Marvel’s stronger Disney+ shows, its conclusion left me uncertain about its potential continuation.
To put it simply, I’m not holding my breath for Hawkeye Season 2 joining the lineup of upcoming Marvel TV shows, given Jeremy Renner’s recent statements. After his snowplow accident earlier this year, he’s expressed gratitude that this doesn’t seem to be in the cards. However, I truly hope that Marvel Studios and Renner can work out a deal, allowing him to reappear in some capacity within the MCU. It would be fantastic to witness Clint Barton back in action, even as Kate Bishop has stepped into the role of Hawkeye.
Currently, “Thunderbolts” is running in cinemas, while “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” will be released on July 25th. In the realm of television, “Ironheart” debuts on June 24th on Disney+, and “Wonder Man” is scheduled to premiere on TV in November 2025.
