Charlie Cox Reveals Why He Hated One Popular ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Episode

As Charlie Cox shared, one season of “Daredevil: Born Again” that he found challenging to work on was the initial Season 1. This year, however, Cox re-emerged in the Marvel universe, resuming his character Matt Murdock/Daredevil in an R-rated streaming series from Marvel Studios, alongside Jon Bernthal and Vincent D’Onofrio. The path to this point was not straightforward, as the show experienced major creative transformations during its journey to air.

Charlie Cox, who plays Daredevil, shared that he wasn’t fond of Episode 5 (“With Interest”) during filming, as it was one of the few episodes left unaltered in the creative overhaul for “Born Again.” This reboot shifted the series from a completely new project to something more connected to Netflix’s original Daredevil series.

Cox openly shared with The Playlist during a recent conversation that he simply didn’t enjoy that particular episode; in fact, it was his least favorite among them all.

I’m not sure if you might find this interesting, but let me mention something about our series. One episode remained unchanged throughout – it’s called ‘With Interest’. We actually filmed that before the strike. It was part of the original production, and personally, I wasn’t a fan of it. In fact, it was my least favorite episode, and I made an effort to express my dislike for it as much as I thought was appropriate.

He shared that he had expressed doubt about a bank heist scenario taking place in 2025 serving as the central plot of the entire episode. However, despite his reservations, he acknowledged that many viewers enjoyed the episode, suggesting that perhaps his initial skepticism was misplaced.

I expressed my doubt about a bank heist happening in 2025, finding it more akin to a 1970s game due to advancements in technology. Moreover, I felt the device portrayed for the crime was not advanced enough. Despite voicing my concerns, I’ve received feedback from numerous people who enjoy that particular episode.

“It just goes to show you just don’t know,” the Daredevil actor remarked:

This just proves how unpredictable things can be. It’s all so dependent on personal preference since everyone’s tastes differ. I’ve been told that particular episode is among their top-rated, making it one of Disney’s highest-ranked shows according to their internal evaluations.

In another part of the interview, Cox spoke about the changes made to the series while it was being produced. He acknowledged that this creative shift was a wise choice and felt that hiring showrunner Dario Scardapane was an excellent move.

As a movie enthusiast, I must clarify that while our previous contributors were exceptional wordsmiths, they were brought on for a specific task. However, as we navigated a different path, it became clear that their expertise wasn’t aligned with this new direction. Therefore, it was logical to recruit someone who had a closer connection to the Marvel Universe, especially during the Netflix era when serialized storytelling was commonplace for them.

Many individuals associated with the remake of “Daredevil” often express the opinion that embracing its Netflix origins was a sound decision, and this perspective is echoed by several contributors to the “Born Again” project.

The story of “Daredevil: Born Again” resumes from the Netflix series “Daredevil,” chronicling the ongoing adventures of lawyer Matt Murdock who also assumes the role of superhero, Daredevil. In this installment, Matt faces a heart-wrenching personal catastrophe unparalleled in the series, as Foggy Nelson, played by Elden Henson, meets his end in Episode 1, creating new complications for Matt and further fueling his battles against the nefarious Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio).

Initially, “Born Again” was conceived with a more process-oriented take on the super-powered attorney, resembling a Marvel-inspired version of “Law & Order” rather than advancing any prior storyline. But following the 2023 actors’ and writers’ strike, which halted production, the show was reimagined to incorporate the character’s backstory from Netflix.

Will Daredevil: Born Again Revist the Episode 5 Formula?

Charlie Cox’s remarks show that actors might sometimes feel uncertain about specific suggestions or actions from the production team, but it’s important to have faith in the process and stick with it.

In Season 1, Episode 5 of Daredevil: Born Again, which was carried over from the previous version, was particularly noteworthy. Although it momentarily paused the narrative flow of the season, it also delivered a captivating standalone story that resembled a thrilling single issue of a Daredevil comic book.

Moving forward into Season 2, it’s quite improbable that we’ll see a repeat of the Episode 5 format in any substantial sense. This particular plot point may have gone unnoticed in Season 1 due to its existence prior to the creative overhaul for Daredevil: Born Again.

Currently, the narrative of the show is centered around a continuous, in-depth storyline about Matt Murdock’s struggles against a New York City administered by Mayor Wilson Fisk and his Anti-Vigilante Task Force. As a result, there seems to be less opportunity for standalone stories within this framework.

It appears that the second season of the show may continue with its dynamic and changing narrative, incorporating unique story segments along the way. However, it’s quite rare for a self-contained episode similar to Season 1, Episode 5, to occur again.
