Ted Danson Reveals Why He Said No to Frasier Reboot

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly waiting for the on-screen reunion of acting greats Ted Danson and Kelsey Grammer. Thankfully, they seem to have patched up their longstanding disagreement, as evidenced by numerous interviews where they’ve put their differences aside. However, the suspense remains unbroken as we continue to yearn for their on-screen chemistry once more. Interestingly, Danson recently shared his reasons behind choosing not to feature in Grammer’s now-canceled reboot.

In an interview, Danson shared his reasons for not reprising the role of Sam Malone in a contemporary adaptation of the popular sitcom. The actor expressed uncertainty about portraying an older Malone convincingly, stating, “I wasn’t sure how to pull off… how does one play Sam Malone in his 60s or 70s?” He further explained that playing an aging character was amusing when he was in his 30s or 40s, but not when he reached his 70s. Consequently, Danson admitted, “I wasn’t sure how to handle that.

The actor initially expressed that he would have been lost and unsure, so he declined. However, influenced by his Cheers colleagues in 2024, he changed his mind. He admitted last year, “Yes, I will do it!” If you ask me now, I’ll come because I felt a sense of obligation to him and my desire to participate,” he explained. Previously, Danson made an appearance in the original Frasier during Season 2, Episode 16 titled “The Show Where Sam Shows Up.

After decades of conflict, originating from disagreements during the filming of Cheers, Kelsey Grammer mentioned a potential collaboration with Ted Danson on his podcast. He’s hinted at this possibility in various projects or Frasier itself. Grammer stated, “Ted and I might actually work together someday.” They have discussed a few ideas, but nothing is confirmed yet. However, Grammer acknowledged that there could be more ground to cover before their characters meet again on screen.

The Frasier Reboot Only Lasted Two Seasons

If the revival of Frasier had garnered a Season 3 renewal, I would have been thrilled to land a guest role in it. Regrettably, Paramount decided to end the series after two seasons due to mixed critical reception. Even though there were rumors that Paramount was attempting to sell the show to other networks like Amazon and Hulu, no updates about its continuation have emerged yet. I suspect the lack of interest or support might be the reason behind this silence.

In a revival almost two decades since the groundbreaking Emmy-winning sitcom Frasier ended, the storyline now focuses on Grammer’s character, who is transitioning from Seattle to teach at Harvard. The reboot also brings back familiar faces from the original series, including Peri Gilpin (Roz Doyle), Bebe Neuwirth (Lilith Sternin), Dan Butler (Bob “Bulldog” Briscoe), Edward Hibbert (Gil Chesterton) and Harriet Sanson Harris (Bebe Glazer).

Both seasons of the Frasier reboot are streaming on Paramount+.
