Adam Driver defends his infamous flop: “It will be felt throughout time”

Adam Driver has defended Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola’s self-funded epic sci-fi movie.

In simpler terms, during the American Film Institute (AFI)’s 50th Life Achievement Award ceremony, the actor from Star Wars commended Francis Ford Coppola, who was being honored. Last year, Driver appeared in Coppola’s film Megalopolis, which is a $120 million production that Coppola has been working on since 1983.

The film garnered mediocre responses, earning a rating of just 45% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing only $14.3 million at the box office – significantly lower than the movie’s production cost.

Last Saturday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, Driver commended Coppola for his boldness in filmmaking.

On the first day of shooting Megalopolis, the actor reminisced about the most exceptional direction he had ever received, which was on the initial day of filming. He shared that Coppola stated in front of everyone, “We’re not pushing ourselves hard enough.” (As reported by Deadline)

Driver stated that living according to principles is crucial, even during a cultural period where the value of art is often undervalued and our field seems vulnerable. In such times, the only way to evaluate a movie’s success becomes its box office earnings.

I find inspiration from people such as Francis, who unwaveringly live by their beliefs and make bold decisions, ultimately driving progress within their field.

The driver went on to remark: “Francis invested $120 million into a unique cinematic expression, which I find impressive. This bold decision undoubtedly left an impact that will resonate in his future works, echo through history, and is clearly evident here in this room.

I understand that your feelings towards honoring Francis are intricate, yet in line with the sentiments expressed by others, I believe this recognition is truly merited by you.

I’m thrilled to see what you’ve accomplished and it’s a privilege to join in celebrating you, your kindness, and your courage.

Upon its release, the movie stirred up debate due to Lionsgate withdrawing a trailer that falsely attributed critic’s quotes.

Megalopolis is available on digital on Apple TV+ and other platforms in the UK.
