Lobo, the popular intergalactic bounty hunter, is joining the world of film with the new Supergirl movie. While he’s been a fan favorite since the ’90s and has appeared in many TV shows, a Lobo movie was actually considered over 30 years ago! It’s taken a long time, but fans will finally see the “Main Man” on the big screen.
For a long time, people have believed a Lobo movie could be huge. Given how well unconventional comic book characters like Deadpool have done in films, Lobo seems like a natural fit to be the next big thing. Fans have consistently said Jason Momoa is perfect for the role, even before he became known as Aquaman. While James Gunn shared the fans’ enthusiasm and eventually cast Momoa as the character, Warner Bros. wasn’t initially convinced a Lobo movie would succeed.
Lobo’s Lost ’90s Movie Potential
A script for a never-made animated Lobo movie from 1995 recently surfaced and sold on eBay, sparking excitement and disappointment among fans who believe it could have been a great film. Details about the script are scarce, but those familiar with DC Comics have been looking back at Lobo’s 1996 animated appearance for a sense of what the movie might have been like. Before Jason Momoa embodied the character, Warner Bros. Animation introduced Lobo with Brad Garrett providing the ideal voice in Superman: The Animated Series. The character, a bounty hunter from Czarnia, often playfully poked fun at well-known DC heroes like Superman, offering a unique and potentially welcome change of pace from typical superhero films of the time.
Few people, even dedicated fans, knew about the unmade Lobo movie until its script appeared for sale online. The script showed an opening scene where Carl Sagan narrated as Lobo sped through space on his Spacehog – a futuristic, Harley-Davidson-style hover bike. From what little was available, it seemed like the movie would have been a faithful take on the character. Sadly, it probably came out too early, much like Deadpool, which faced years of studio rejection before finally getting made.
A Lobo Solo Project Could Still Happen

With Jason Momoa’s first appearance as Lobo in Supergirl, fans might really enjoy the character, potentially leading to his own show or movie. James Gunn has already proven with his DC Universe that he’s willing to give opportunities to less famous heroes like Clayface, Peacemaker, and the Creature Commandos, so Lobo could be next. While we might see Lobo return to live-action, animation could be a great way to further develop the bounty hunter within the DC Universe.
Because Creature Commandos used animation, it could create really exaggerated characters, helping it feel different from other DC shows and movies. It wasn’t held back by the limitations of live-action filmmaking, yet it still showed plenty of action. Given that Lobo is a wildly dramatic character known for intense scenes, a visually bold and over-the-top animated series feels like a perfect fit.
Jason Momoa initially believed he was auditioning for the role of Lobo, not Aquaman. He also thought taking on the part of Lobo would involve more than just a cameo in Supergirl. Momoa’s strong enthusiasm for the character makes him the perfect choice to play Lobo for many years to come, and he’d definitely be interested in a future Lobo project, whether it’s a movie or animated series.
It’s Time For R-Rated Anti-Heroes

In 1995, an R-rated superhero movie, particularly an animated one, was a huge gamble. A character like Lobo – a foul-mouthed, alien bounty hunter who doesn’t hold back – would have been considered very risky. Now, with the success of shows like The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, a modern Lobo project could likely aim for that same R-rating. Dedicated fans would appreciate DC keeping the character true to his gritty comic book origins. It’s evident that this is the Lobo Jason Momoa was excited to portray.
After thirty years, the DC character Lobo is finally getting his own movie! Fans are excited about how DCU is approaching the character, and the positive response to an early script shows just how popular Lobo remains. With DCU expanding into new areas of its universe, it won’t be long before Lobo gets a chance to star in his own film.
